Casemiro Leads Brazil as Captain Against South Korea in Seoul

Casemiro will captain the Brazil national football team for the 17th time during a friendly match against South Korea on March 15, 2024. Under the guidance of manager Carlo Ancelotti, the seasoned midfielder is ready to embrace his leadership role, both on and off the field. This match marks his return to the captaincy after a two-year break, with his last appearance as skipper occurring in October 2023 against Uruguay.
Since making his international debut in 2011, Casemiro has been a pivotal figure for Brazil. His reinstatement as captain comes as Ancelotti, who previously coached him at Real Madrid, seeks to build a cohesive and competitive team in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
At a press conference prior to the match, the 33-year-old midfielder emphasized the importance of leadership. “I am one of those players who thinks that there are several leaders, several ways of leading. Each one leads in their own way,” he stated. Casemiro added that he prefers to lead by example, demonstrating dedication and commitment to the younger players within the squad.
Casemiro’s relationship with Ancelotti, which spans over a decade, has fostered a deep trust that is vital for his leadership role. “Without a doubt, my relationship with the coach creates a greater affinity. But I like to show it—being the first, being at the gym, setting an example,” he remarked, highlighting his commitment to mentoring emerging talents on the team.
Brazil’s match against South Korea will be followed by another friendly encounter with Japan on March 19, 2024, at the Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo. This series of matches provides Ancelotti with the opportunity to assess his squad and refine strategies ahead of the upcoming tournament.
As Brazil prepares for these critical fixtures, Casemiro’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding the team through this transitional phase. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, Brazil aims to solidify its position as a formidable force in international football once again.
