Carolina Kostner Returns as Mentor at Milano Cortina 2026
Former Italian figure skater Carolina Kostner will celebrate the culmination of her Olympic journey at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games. This event marks two decades since she carried the flag for Italy at the age of 19 during the Turin 2006 Olympics. While Kostner will not compete, she will serve as a mentor to Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama, focusing on artistic and choreographic elements that defined her own illustrious career.
Kostner’s involvement in the Milano Cortina Games extends beyond mentorship. She will also take on the role of a television commentator, providing insights into the world of figure skating. Her return to the Olympic stage comes as a wave of high-profile comebacks captures the sports community’s attention. At 38, Kostner has ruled out a competitive return, opting instead to guide and inspire the next generation of skaters.
“Being able to represent skating during the Olympics in Italy is a great honour,” she stated. “It’s a circle that closes, let’s say. Having followed my dreams for so many years, now being able to pass them on to future generations is a wonderful responsibility.”
From Expectations to Achievements
When Kostner first took to the ice at the Turin 2006 Olympics, she faced immense pressure as the local favorite. Unfortunately, her performance did not meet the high expectations, and she struggled, falling multiple times in front of her home crowd. Nevertheless, her resilience shone through as she went on to achieve remarkable success, including five European titles, a world championship gold in 2012, and an Olympic bronze medal at Sochi 2014.
Kostner’s journey has been defined by her unwavering love for skating, driven by discipline and determination. Her career faced significant challenges, including a lengthy suspension in 2015 for her involvement in a doping scandal linked to her former partner, Alex Schwazer, a former Olympic champion in race walking. Despite these hurdles, she continued to compete at the highest levels, finishing fifth in Pyeongchang 2018 at the age of 31 before injuries ultimately led to her retirement.
Advice for the Next Generation
Reflecting on her experiences, Kostner has valuable advice for young skaters aspiring to compete at the Milano Cortina Games. She emphasizes the importance of staying present, confronting difficulties head-on, and seeking support from trusted mentors. Recognizing the Olympics as a unique opportunity, she encourages athletes to approach this moment with dedication, precision, and a sense of gratitude.
“I wasn’t lucky enough to have an idol in Italy to inspire me, someone I could compete with, see live, and also get to know as a person,” she noted, recalling how she first saw her favorite skater, Michelle Kwan, at a world championship in which she also participated.
“I promised my younger self that I would make my experience and my presence available to anyone who wanted it. I want them to know, and they do know, that I am there for them,” Kostner added, highlighting her commitment to mentoring the next generation of athletes.
As the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games approach, Kostner’s role as a mentor and commentator reflects her deep connection to the sport and her desire to inspire young skaters. Her journey, from a young competitor with dreams to a seasoned veteran passing on wisdom, embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication that defines Olympic athletes.
