Bayern Munich Thrashes Wolfsburg 8-1, Extends Bundesliga Lead
Bayern Munich dominated VfL Wolfsburg in a remarkable 8-1 victory on January 11, 2024, as the Bundesliga resumed following its winter break. The champions, now leading the league with 44 points, increased their advantage over second-placed Borussia Dortmund to 11 points.
The match began with a swift own goal by Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer just five minutes in, turning a cutback from Luis Diaz into the net. This marked the third consecutive league match in which Wolfsburg has scored an own goal, setting a new Bundesliga record.
Wolfsburg responded promptly, leveling the score in the 15th minute when Dzenan Pejcinovic finished a well-executed passing sequence that dissected the Bayern defense. However, the home side regained control shortly after. In the 30th minute, Diaz headed in a cross from Michael Olise, who currently leads the league with nine assists, marking Diaz’s ninth goal of the season.
Olise’s influence on the match continued as he scored in the 53rd minute with a curling shot, extending Bayern’s lead. The misfortunes for Wolfsburg persisted, with a fourth own goal in three matches occurring when Moritz Jenz inadvertently directed an Olise cutback into his own net.
Bayern Munich maintained their offensive momentum, striking the post shortly after with Olise’s effort in the 64th minute. The hosts then added two goals within a rapid 80 seconds, courtesy of substitutes Raphael Guerreiro and Bundesliga leading scorer Harry Kane.
The rout continued as Olise capped off his outstanding performance by scoring his second goal in the 76th minute, celebrating his 50th Bundesliga match with Bayern. Finally, Leon Goretzka added the eighth goal in the 88th minute, sealing the largest victory Bayern has ever achieved against Wolfsburg.
Bayern’s home record against Wolfsburg remains formidable, having won 27 of 29 Bundesliga matches at home and drawing just twice. This emphatic win not only extends their lead at the top of the table but also showcases their offensive prowess as they aim for another championship title.
