Bayern Munich Aims for Cup Victory Against Cologne to Maintain Winning Streak
Bayern Munich seeks to extend their remarkable start to the season as they head into the German Cup second round against Cologne on Wednesday. The team has achieved an impressive 13-match winning streak across all competitions, including a recent 3-0 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach, which solidified their position at the top of the Bundesliga with a perfect 24 points from eight fixtures.
This winning streak matches the record for the best start to a campaign in Europe’s top five leagues, a feat previously accomplished by AC Milan during the 1992-93 season. Coach Vincent Kompany emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum in his press conference, stating, “We are doing a lot of things right at the moment and we have to take this into the next game.”
Bayern faces a challenging match against Cologne, who have demonstrated strong defensive capabilities this season. Kompany acknowledged their performance, noting, “You have to give them credit for what they do in defence. They operate with a lot of urgency.” The match offers Cologne the advantage of home support, which Kompany recognizes as a contributing factor to their confidence.
In addition to the German Cup match, Bayern’s schedule is demanding, with three matches lined up in just seven days. Following the clash with Cologne, they will host in-form Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday before facing reigning Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain next Tuesday.
Bayern’s sports director, Christoph Freund, expressed the team’s eagerness for the upcoming matches. “The hunger for tomorrow is big,” he said, underscoring the significance of the Cup match. “It’s a knockout match. Everyone has the great wish to go back to Berlin for a German Cup final.”
The team’s determination to succeed in the Cup, especially after their last final appearance in 2020, reflects their ambition to reclaim glory in the German competition. With their current form and a packed schedule ahead, Bayern Munich is poised to continue their impressive run.
