Balogun’s Goal Guides Monaco to Victory Over Galatasaray
Folarin Balogun’s decisive goal propelled AS Monaco to a 1-0 victory against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on December 9, 2023. The win marked an impressive extension of Monaco’s unbeaten streak in the competition to five matches.
Balogun broke the deadlock in the 68th minute with a well-placed shot from a corner, catching Galatasaray’s substitute goalkeeper, Gunay Guvenc, off guard. Guvenc had only just entered the match to replace Ugurcan Cakir, who was forced off due to injury. Cakir had played a crucial role, notably saving a penalty from Denis Zakaria in the 50th minute, awarded following a VAR review for a foul by Davinson Sanchez on Takumi Minamino.
Despite Balogun’s eventual success, he initially struggled to find the net, narrowly missing two promising opportunities shortly after the hour mark. His efforts were matched by Galatasaray’s strong start, with Ilkay Gundogan firing a shot high over the crossbar in the 13th minute, followed by Baris Alper Yilmaz striking the post six minutes later.
Both teams now sit at nine points in their group standings. Looking ahead, AS Monaco will travel to face Real Madrid, while Galatasaray will host Atletico Madrid in their upcoming matches next month.
This victory not only boosts Monaco’s confidence but also solidifies Balogun’s role as a key player in their Champions League campaign.
