Australia Bowled Out for 132, England Faces 175 Run Chase
Australia was bowled out for 132 runs in their second innings during the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 27, 2023. This result sets England a target of 175 runs to achieve victory in the match. The Australian team struggled significantly, losing their last four wickets for just 34 runs after resuming their innings at 98 for six following lunch.
Brydon Carse emerged as the standout performer for England, taking 4 wickets for 34 runs. He was supported by captain Ben Stokes, who claimed 3 wickets for 24 runs. The English bowling attack delivered a formidable performance, particularly in the morning session where Australia experienced a dramatic collapse, losing four wickets for only 27 runs.
In an unfortunate turn of events for England, fast bowler Gus Atkinson left the field with a left hamstring strain after having dismissed nightwatchman Scott Boland for six runs in the sixth over of the morning. This injury could impact England’s chances of securing their first Test victory in Australia in 15 years.
Carse played a pivotal role in dismantling Australia’s batting order. He managed to remove key players, including Travis Head, who was bowled for 46 runs, and wicketkeeper Alex Carey, caught in the slips for just four runs. Josh Tongue, who had taken 5 wickets for 45 runs in the first innings, also contributed by dismissing number three Marnus Labuschagne for eight runs and number five Usman Khawaja, who was out for a duck after a miscued pull shot.
Australia currently leads the five-Test series 3-0, having achieved victories in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide. The team will be keen to maintain their dominance as they head into England’s second innings, while England will need to mount a strong response to challenge for a win in this crucial match.
