Ancelotti: Neymar Must Be Fit for Brazil’s World Cup Plans

Brazilian forward Neymar remains a key part of the national team’s strategy as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. However, Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti emphasized that Neymar must achieve full fitness to be considered for a recall. Ancelotti made these remarks on Monday, ahead of Brazil’s friendly match against Japan on March 25, 2024, in Tokyo.
Neymar, now 33, has not played for Brazil in nearly two years, with injuries affecting his performance since he returned to Santos after a stint in Saudi Arabia. Ancelotti acknowledged the forward’s exceptional talent but highlighted the necessity of good physical condition for Neymar to effectively contribute to the team. He stated, “Neymar can play at his highest level in this team without any problems. When he is in good physical condition, he has the quality to play not only in Brazil but in any team in the world because of his talent.”
The last time Neymar donned the iconic yellow jersey was in October 2023, when he suffered serious knee ligament damage, which has hindered his attempts to return to form. In the interim, Brazil has shown promising signs, notably with a commanding 5-0 victory over South Korea last Friday. This performance showcased Brazil’s traditional flair for the “beautiful game,” but Ancelotti stressed the importance of balance and teamwork in achieving success.
“The Brazilian national team wants to play beautiful football and can play it, yes, but it depends on what you mean by beautiful game,” Ancelotti remarked. He noted that while individual skill is essential, playing effectively both with and without the ball is crucial. Under Ancelotti’s guidance since taking over in May, the team has shown improved defensive capabilities, conceding only one goal—a penalty against Bolivia in the high-altitude city of El Alto—while netting nine goals.
As Brazil approaches the match against Japan, Ancelotti has the opportunity to further refine his tactical approach. He has prioritized attitude and adaptability in this short time frame leading up to the World Cup. With three wins, one draw, and one defeat since his appointment, the coach is focused on building a cohesive unit. Reflecting on the team’s development, he stated, “Commitment and teamwork are essential. Playing beautifully is important, but the most important thing is to win.”
Tuesday’s match against Japan represents a critical opportunity for both Ancelotti and Neymar as they navigate the path toward a successful World Cup campaign.
