Amorim Stands Firm on Tactics Despite Manchester United Struggles

Ruben Amorim, the manager of Manchester United, has expressed unwavering confidence in his tactical approach, stating that not even the pope could persuade him to abandon his preferred back three formation. This declaration comes amid increasing scrutiny following a disappointing start to the season, where United has secured only one win in four Premier League matches and faced an unexpected exit from the League Cup against League Two side Grimsby.
Since taking over in November 2023, Amorim has led the team to just seven victories out of 27 league games, culminating in the club’s worst-ever finish in the Premier League. The pressure has intensified as fans and analysts alike question his tactics, particularly as other elite clubs in the league have opted for a more conventional back four.
During a press conference ahead of United’s home match against Chelsea, Amorim was directly asked about his tactical decisions, especially after a recent visit from co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. He firmly rejected any suggestion that Ratcliffe had advised him to change his approach. “No, no, no… Not even the pope will change this. This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life,” he stated emphatically.
Amorim emphasized that he believes altering his tactics under pressure would undermine his authority in the eyes of the players. “If I’m a player and I have a coach that, with a lot of pressure and people all around the world are saying, ‘You need to change the system’, says ‘I’m going to change’, they will look at me in a different way,” he explained.
The coach is also facing criticism for his decision to deploy Bruno Fernandes in a deeper midfield position. Traditionally known for his attacking prowess, Fernandes has struggled to replicate his previous form in this new role. Amorim justified his decision, stating, “I want Bruno to have more possession to try to control the game. Maybe he doesn’t have the same freedom to get inside the box, but he is getting there and he can do his shots.”
Despite these challenges, Amorim remains focused on his vision for the team. “Everything is important when you think about the impact that a decision is going to have on the team,” he noted. “I’m doing things my way. I hope to have the time to change, but it will be an evolution.”
As Manchester United prepares for the upcoming clash against Chelsea, Amorim’s steadfast commitment to his tactical philosophy will be put to the test. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if his approach can turn around the club’s fortunes this season.
