Alex De Minaur Advances at U.S. Open, Seeks Spotlight

Australian tennis player Alex De Minaur has successfully reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the third consecutive year, achieving this milestone during a third-round match against German player Daniel Altmaier. The match concluded with a score of 6-7(7) 6-3 6-4 when Altmaier retired, enabling De Minaur to advance without needing to play the final set.
De Minaur, who is seeded eighth in the tournament, expressed his surprise at being scheduled to play on Court 17, the smallest venue at the U.S. Open. “It is a little bit of a headscratcher for me. I’m not gonna lie,” he remarked during a press conference following his victory. He acknowledged having no issues with the court itself, stating, “I’ve played some good matches on that court, but I kind of felt like maybe I could have played on a bigger court.”
Despite these sentiments, De Minaur remains focused on his performance. “The way I kind of look at these things when things kind of don’t play out the way I want them is just, I’ve got to win more matches, right? If I win enough matches, I’m sure I’ll play on bigger courts,” he added.
Next Challenges Await
In the upcoming fourth round, De Minaur is set to face Swiss qualifier Leandro Reidi. Should he win, a potential clash with either Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime or Russian Andrey Rublev could await him in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old has a history of reaching the quarter-finals at all four major tournaments over the past two years, although he has yet to progress beyond that stage.
De Minaur has developed a reputation for flying under the radar throughout his career. “I feel like I’ve been under the radar my whole career, so it’s nothing new,” he stated with a smile. He emphasized his belief in allowing his performance on the court to speak for itself, saying, “The way I just go about my things is just let the tennis do the talking, right? And I take a lot of pride in that.”
As he looks forward to the next challenges in New York, De Minaur expressed his satisfaction with reaching the second week of the tournament. “For me, this was the first job done. Now on to the second week, which I’m quite excited for,” he concluded, hinting at his determination to continue competing at a high level.
As the tournament progresses, De Minaur’s journey will be closely watched, especially as he seeks to claim the recognition he deserves on the world stage.
