Albacete Shocks Real Madrid as Jefte Scores Late Double
Albacete’s Jefte Betancor delivered a stunning performance on January 15, 2024, leading his team to a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey. The 32-year-old striker, who has had a winding career journey, came off the bench to score a crucial double, knocking the Spanish giants out of the tournament and marking a bitter debut for their new manager, Alvaro Arbeloa.
Jefte’s first goal came in the 81st minute, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the home crowd at the Carlos Belmonte Stadium into a frenzy. He followed up with another strike in added time, sealing the upset and sending shockwaves through Spanish football. The match is now regarded as one of the biggest upsets in Copa del Rey history.
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Jefte began his career at Hercules and played for several lower-league clubs in Spain, including Tenerife B and UD San Fernando. After struggling to establish himself in the domestic leagues, he ventured abroad, experiencing stints in Austria, Romania, and Greece. Currently on loan at Albacete from Olympiacos, Jefte’s recent success highlights his resilience and commitment to the sport.
Reflecting on his journey, Jefte revealed that he nearly abandoned football entirely nearly a decade ago. Overcome with disillusionment, he took a six-month hiatus to work as an electrician. “My head wasn’t in the right place,” he said after the match. “I quit football and started working and training in my neighbourhood. With help from my family and psychologist, I returned, and today it feels so rewarding. Nine years ago, I couldn’t have imagined this moment.”
Jefte’s emotional contribution was palpable throughout the match, culminating in a heartfelt celebration with Albacete supporters. “The team fought for 95 minutes to experience something like this,” he expressed, describing the night as “magical.” The forward noted that the phone call with his wife and son following the match was the most cherished moment of all, bringing him to tears.
Despite the euphoria of victory, Jefte admitted that he felt anxious until the final whistle. “Against Real Madrid, time seems to stop. They’re a club that never gives up until the final whistle,” he stated. Adding a humorous note to the post-match celebrations, Jefte shared that he required medical attention after a mishap with the team doctor during the festivities. “The doctor accidentally hit me on the nose, and I started bleeding non-stop. He owes me for that one!”
This victory has not only propelled Albacete into the next round of the Copa del Rey but has also etched Jefte Betancor‘s name into the folklore of the competition. The defeat leaves Real Madrid grappling with an unexpected early exit, a rare situation for the club known for its dominance in Spanish football.
