Africa Cup of Nations: Heavyweights Set for Knockout Stage
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has entered its knockout stage, showcasing a lineup of heavyweight teams ready to battle for the continental title. As the first round of matches concluded on January 1, only one former champion, Zambia, was eliminated. The remaining 11 former winners advanced to the last 16, setting the stage for thrilling clashes in the coming days.
This year’s tournament in Morocco has seen only Mozambique and Tanzania progress to the knockout stages for the first time, qualifying as the best third-placed teams. Notably, Sudan has advanced past the first round for just the second time since their victory in 1970. The top 12 ranked teams in Africa, including seven squads that will participate in the World Cup later this year, have all secured their places in the knockout phase.
Exciting Matchups Ahead
The knockout fixtures will kick off on Saturday, starting with a match between Senegal and Sudan in Tangier. Senegal, currently ranked second in Africa, topped their group on goal difference over the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, they will be without their captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, who received a red card in their decisive 3-0 victory against Benin on January 1. Despite this setback, Senegal boasts significant depth in their squad.
Hosts Morocco, ranked as Africa’s top team and semi-finalists in the last World Cup, demonstrated their strength with a convincing 3-0 win against Zambia, which secured them the top spot in Group A. Coach Walid Regragui expressed the high expectations surrounding the team, stating, “From now on every game is a cup final,” as they prepare for their upcoming match against Tanzania in Rabat.
High Stakes for Contenders
Both Algeria and Nigeria enter the knockout stage with perfect records. Nigeria is expected to advance against Mozambique on January 8, while Algeria’s match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on January 9 is generating considerable attention. Algeria defender Mehdi Dorval highlighted the significance of this upcoming clash, stating, “It’s going to be a big match. The key will be mental, because they are a big team and so are we.”
As the tournament progresses, the excitement surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations intensifies. The knockout stage promises fierce competition, as the continent’s elite teams vie for the prestigious title. Fans across Africa and beyond eagerly await the unfolding drama on the pitch.
