Indus Towers Partners with IIT Madras to Innovate Sustainable Infrastructure
Indus Towers Limited has entered a significant partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to advance research in Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) structural applications. Announced on September 16, 2025, this collaboration represents a pioneering industry-academia initiative aimed at exploring the structural, economic, and environmental benefits of GFRP, particularly in the telecommunications sector.
This initiative falls within Indus Towers’ flagship Corporate Social Responsibility program, known as Pragati, which emphasizes sustainable innovation and inclusive growth. The company has pledged to finance research at IIT Madras that seeks to develop alternatives to traditional steel structures that are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and high-performing.
Anil Gupta, Chief Technology & Delivery Officer at Indus Towers, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He stated, “This partnership with IIT Madras is a bold step toward redefining the material science landscape for various industries working on GFRP. GFRP offers a transformative opportunity that is not only structurally sound and cost-effective but also aligns with our sustainability goals.” Gupta highlighted the commitment to engineering solutions that are resilient, scalable, and environmentally responsible.
The advantages of GFRP are becoming increasingly recognized across industries. With its superior strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance—especially in coastal and high-exposure environments—and low maintenance requirements, GFRP is emerging as a next-generation material for infrastructure. Its flexibility in design, ease of transport, and potential for reuse make it an attractive option for future-ready infrastructure projects.
Research Goals and Implications
IIT Madras will spearhead comprehensive investigations into the mechanical performance, durability, and lifecycle sustainability of GFRP materials. The objective is to establish robust design and safety standards that could potentially set new benchmarks for the telecommunications industry and beyond.
Prof. Ravindra Gettu, who is in charge of the project at IIT Madras, remarked, “The grant has enabled us to assess the material and structural potential of glass fibre-reinforced polymers for a range of applications.” He noted that the research could span various uses, including telecommunication towers, scaffolding, and roofing systems, which could revolutionize how these structures are designed and implemented.
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni & Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, emphasized the importance of industry collaborations in translating research into practical solutions. He stated, “This partnership stands as a testament to how industry-academia collaborations can take research from the laboratory to market-ready solutions that are socially and economically impactful.”
Indus Towers and IIT Madras: A Vision for Sustainable Development
The collaboration between Indus Towers and IIT Madras underscores a shared vision of fostering a digitally connected and sustainable India. Indus Towers is recognized as a leading provider of passive telecom infrastructure, operating over 251,773 telecom towers across the country. Their commitment to green energy initiatives exemplifies their leadership in responsible infrastructure development.
IIT Madras, established in 1959 as an ‘Institute of National Importance,’ is known for its rigorous academic programs and innovative research across multiple fields of science and technology. With a faculty of over 650 and a diverse student body of more than 10,000, the institute is a hub for entrepreneurial culture and advanced interdisciplinary research.
This partnership not only aims to enhance the material science landscape but also reinforces the commitment of both organizations to making substantial contributions toward sustainable and inclusive growth in India’s infrastructure sector.
