Indus Towers and IIT Madras Partner to Advance Sustainable GFRP Research

Indus Towers Limited has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on September 16, 2025, to research Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) structural sections. This collaboration represents a significant advancement in the telecom infrastructure sector, focusing on the structural, economic, and environmental benefits of GFRP applications.
As part of Indus Towers’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Pragati, the partnership aims to drive sustainable innovation and inclusive growth. Indus Towers is set to support leading-edge research at IIT Madras, striving to develop lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and high-performance alternatives to traditional steel structures.
Innovative Approaches to Infrastructure
Anil Gupta, Chief Technology & Delivery Officer at Indus Towers, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He stated, “This partnership with IIT Madras is a bold step toward redefining the material science landscape for various industries working on GFRP. GFRP offers a transformative opportunity that is not only structurally sound and cost-effective but also aligns with our sustainability goals.”
GFRP is gaining global recognition as a next-generation material for infrastructure due to its superior strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to corrosion, particularly in coastal regions, and low maintenance requirements. Its design adaptability and ease of installation further enhance its appeal as a sustainable choice for future infrastructure projects.
IIT Madras will conduct comprehensive investigations into the mechanical performance, durability, and lifecycle sustainability of GFRP materials. This research aims to establish robust design and safety standards, potentially setting benchmarks for various sectors, including telecommunications.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Indus Towers’ initiative aligns with its broader vision of fostering a digitally connected and sustainable India while reinforcing its leadership in responsible infrastructure development. Prof. Ravindra Gettu, Professor-in-charge at IIT Madras, elaborated on the potential applications of GFRP, stating, “The grant has enabled us to assess the material and structural potential of glass fibre-reinforced polymers for a range of applications, such as telecommunication towers, scaffolding, and roofing elements.”
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni & Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, highlighted the significance of such collaborations. He remarked, “IIT Madras’ partnership with Indus Towers stands as a testament to how industry-academia collaborations can translate research into market-ready, socially impactful solutions. The GFRP research project exemplifies our commitment to delivering sustainable and durable alternatives for India’s telecom infrastructure.”
Indus Towers Limited, recognized as India’s leading provider of passive telecom infrastructure, operates a portfolio of 251,773 telecom towers across 22 telecom circles. The company is a pioneer in adopting green energy initiatives for its operations, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices.
The partnership with IIT Madras marks a pivotal step towards innovation, aiming to transform the future of infrastructure in India through research and collaboration. Both organizations are poised to contribute significantly to the advancement of material science and sustainable development in the telecom industry.
