India Emerges as a Global Leader in Science and Technology
India has established itself as a prominent leader in science and technology, setting global standards in space exploration, defence, healthcare, and innovation. This assertion was made by Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, during his address at the inaugural session of the Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan 2025 held at the National Sanskrit University on December 26, 2025.
Singh attributed this remarkable progress to “decisive policy support from the top political hierarchy.” He noted that since 2014, there has been an unprecedented focus on science, technology, and innovation, accompanied by significant budgetary allocations. This shift has effectively removed long-standing barriers that previously limited India’s scientific capabilities.
Highlighting the remarkable growth in startups, Singh reported that the number of startups in India has surged from approximately 300-400 in 2014 to nearly 200,000 today. The country’s position in the Global Innovation Index has also improved significantly, rising from 81 to 38 in recent years.
Space and Defence Achievements
India’s advancements in space and strategic technologies are underscored by successful lunar missions. These missions have provided the first confirmed evidence of water on the Moon and achieved a historic landing near the lunar south pole. Singh emphasized that these accomplishments reflect India’s growing strength in space exploration.
The Minister also highlighted the progress of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing sector, noting that defence exports have reached Rs 23,662 crore, with systems supplied to nearly 100 countries. He stated, “India’s indigenous missile and defence technologies have demonstrated their credibility and reliability, leading to growing international demand.” This demand has been fueled by sustained investments in atomic energy, space, and advanced research over the past decade.
Healthcare Innovations and Societal Impact
In the realm of healthcare, Singh pointed out that India has become a global leader in preventive healthcare and affordable medical solutions. The country has made significant contributions by developing and sharing COVID-19 vaccines globally, alongside exporting medical devices and implants worth billions of dollars annually. These initiatives have bolstered India’s reputation within the international healthcare innovation ecosystem.
Singh also emphasized that scientific advancements in India are now extending beyond laboratories. Innovations are being applied to improve everyday living through initiatives such as smart cities, telemedicine, satellite-based communication, geotagging, and digital governance platforms.
Several major national missions, including those focused on space exploration, nuclear energy, deep ocean research, Himalayan studies, and the Aroma Mission, are paving the way for new economic growth and opportunities for youth entrepreneurship. Singh’s remarks encapsulate a vision of a dynamic and innovative India, positioning the nation as a formidable player on the global scientific and technological stage.
