India Accelerates Science Research with Major Innovations in 2025

India’s science and technology sector experienced remarkable advancements in 2025, driven by substantial government funding aimed at enhancing research and innovation. The country climbed to the 38th position among 139 economies in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2025, a significant improvement from its 81st position in 2015.

Major cities contributing to this progress include Bengaluru, which ranks 21st, Delhi at 26th, and Mumbai at 46th, all of which saw improvements in their standings this year. This growth comes on the heels of the government’s strategic initiatives to foster private sector participation in research and development.

In July 2025, the Indian government launched the Research, Development and Innovation Fund, with a total outlay of Rs 1.0 Lakh crore over six years. For the fiscal year 2025-26, Rs 20,000 crore has been specifically allocated to bolster these efforts.

Advancements in Quantum and Cyber-Physical Technologies

The National Quantum Mission (NQM) played a pivotal role in establishing operational hubs across 43 institutions by mid-2025. As part of this initiative, the government allocated Rs 450.99 crore for FY 2025-26, with Rs 55.44 crore utilized by November 2025. Additionally, under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), significant projects such as “Bharat-Gen” were initiated. This project focuses on developing generative AI for Indian languages, enhancing digital infrastructure for cybersecurity, and supporting smart applications.

The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) achieved a significant milestone with the installation of 37 supercomputers, collectively offering a computing power of 40 Petaflops. These supercomputers are distributed across premier institutions like IISc, IITs, and several research organizations in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, supporting over 10,000 researchers, including more than 1,700 PhD scholars.

Expansion of Artificial Intelligence and Indigenous Innovations

In 2025, the IndiaAI Mission saw substantial growth, with a budget exceeding Rs 10,300 crore. The initiative deployed 38,000 GPUs to ensure affordable computing power for startups and researchers. The establishment of key Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across various sectors such as education, healthcare, and clean energy reflects India’s commitment to expanding its AI ecosystem.

A significant milestone was achieved with the launch of the DHRUV64 Microprocessor in December 2025. Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), this is India’s first fully indigenous 1.0 GHz, 64-bit dual-core microprocessor, engineered for applications in 5G, IoT, and automotive sectors. Moreover, the VIKRAM3201 microprocessor was introduced as the first Make-in-India 32-bit chip, specifically designed for harsh space environments.

The government’s flagship initiatives such as INSPIRE, INSPIRE-MANAK, and WISE-KIRAN have positively impacted a vast number of school students, researchers, and women scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and scientific inquiry. Furthermore, in December 2025, India launched its inaugural R&D roadmap for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) to accelerate its net-zero emissions mission.
