Beijing International Week for Science Literacy Highlights AI Impact
The 2025 Beijing International Week for Science Literacy concluded on September 20, 2025, at the Beijing Science Center, marking the end of a five-day program dedicated to the theme “Science Communication in the Age of AI.” This event focused on how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance science outreach, promote global collaboration, and improve public engagement with scientific initiatives.
The opening ceremony featured influential remarks from key figures in the science community. Among those addressing the audience were Li Xin, Executive Vice President of the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST); Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia; Guo Zhe, Director of the China Science and Technology Museum; and Lazzat Kussainova, Chairperson and Chief Researcher of the Kazakhstan-based International Centre of Scientific Collaborations.
During the ceremony, Su Guomin, Vice President of BAST and Secretary-General of the Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals, presented certificates to new members joining the network. This year’s event brought together nearly two dozen representatives from science festival committees, science centers, and museums across 14 countries, including participants from Thailand, South Africa, and Norway. In addition, over 200 participants from various provinces and municipalities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Anhui, attended. This diverse assembly included directors of science and technology museums, researchers, and faculty members from universities and institutes.
Throughout the week, international experts shared their knowledge and insights on immersive science education practices. A multinational exhibition zone showcased interactive displays that highlighted innovative approaches to public engagement. Youth-oriented workshops, organized in collaboration with global institutions, provided hands-on activities aimed at inspiring the next generation of innovators.
The event underscored the vital role of AI in enhancing scientific communication and fostering collaboration across borders. As the world faces shared societal challenges, the discussions held during this week are expected to influence future strategies for engaging the public with science in meaningful ways.
