ASTRI Unveils Six Innovative Technologies at InnoCarnival 2025

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has introduced six pioneering technologies at the InnoCarnival 2025, showcasing innovations in various fields including artificial intelligence, smart mobility, and medical technology. The event, which commenced on October 18, 2025, at the Hong Kong Science Park, will continue until October 26. This year’s theme, “I&T Unlocks Your Dream,” aims to promote a culture of innovation and technology among the public.
Ir Dr Ted Suen, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, emphasized the institute’s dedication to supporting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government in advancing science and technology. He noted the importance of such initiatives in fostering local growth in innovation and technology. “ASTRI remains focused on developing practical, impactful technologies that bring real benefits to society and drive efficiency across industries,” stated Ir Dr Suen. He expressed hope that InnoCarnival would inspire young individuals to explore careers in innovation and technology.
At ASTRI’s booth, visitors have the opportunity to engage with interactive digital demonstrations, including generative AI games and various advanced technologies. The showcased innovations include a system-on-chip for capsule endoscopy, an automated diamond colour grading instrument, advanced drone technologies, and a smart optical precision positioning system for modular integrated construction (MiC).
Highlights of ASTRI’s Innovative Technologies
One of the standout innovations is the Wireless System-on-Chip (SoC) for capsule endoscopy, which offers ultra-high-speed transmission capabilities over seven times faster than traditional systems. This technology not only delivers improved image quality but also enhances diagnostic accuracy. The chip’s compact size—42% smaller than previous designs—allows for more comfortable examinations, minimizing the need for anaesthesia and reducing infection risks.
The Automated Diamond Colour Grading machine introduces high-precision evaluation by using internal reference standards to minimize errors caused by environmental and human factors. This technology achieves an accuracy of ±0.5 grade and can continuously assess diamond colour on production lines, addressing the inefficiencies of traditional grading methods.
ASTRI’s Drone Technology for Urban Parcel Delivery optimizes the delivery of lightweight parcels in urban settings. By utilizing advanced positioning systems, including GNSS-RTK and inertial navigation algorithms, the drone ensures reliable operation even in areas with obstructed signals. This innovation allows for quicker deliveries, which is especially beneficial for emergency medical supplies.
The Smart Optical Precision Positioning System enhances modular integrated construction by employing non-visible light communication, edge computing, and event sensing. It tracks six-degree-of-freedom pose changes in real-time, enabling features such as path prediction and operational assistance, which improve construction quality and decision-making.
Additionally, ASTRI has developed a Fraud Detection and Awareness Game to combat advanced threats posed by generative AI, including voice cloning and deepfake technologies. This interactive mini-game helps visitors learn to distinguish between authentic and AI-generated images, raising awareness about digital fraud risks.
The institute’s All-In-One Tech Showcase features an interactive digital display that allows attendees to explore advancements in AI, smart mobility, and more. This dynamic approach to showcasing technology enhances visitor engagement and understanding of ASTRI’s research achievements.
About ASTRI
Founded in 2000 by the HKSAR Government, ASTRI’s mission is to enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research. The institute operates across five Technology Divisions, focusing on areas such as advanced electronics and artificial intelligence. Over the years, ASTRI has transferred nearly 1,600 technologies to industry and secured approximately 1,200 patents in various regions, including the Chinese Mainland and the United States.
