ASTRI Unveils Six Innovative Technologies at InnoCarnival 2025

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has showcased six innovative technologies at the 2025 InnoCarnival, an event designed to highlight advancements in innovation and technology. Running from October 18 to 26, 2025, at the Hong Kong Science Park, the event attracts thousands of visitors eager to engage with the latest smart solutions across various fields, including artificial intelligence (AI), medtech, and intelligent manufacturing.
Under the theme “I&T Unlocks Your Dream,” the InnoCarnival, organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission, aims to promote a culture of innovation among the public. Ir Dr Ted Suen, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, emphasized the institute’s dedication to supporting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government in enhancing science awareness. He stated, “ASTRI remains focused on developing practical, impactful technologies that bring real benefits to society and drive efficiency across industries.”
Visitors to ASTRI’s booth can immerse themselves in interactive demonstrations, generative AI games, and groundbreaking innovations, including a system-on-chip for capsule endoscopy and automated diamond grading technologies.
Highlights of ASTRI’s Featured Technologies
One of the standout innovations is the Wireless System-on-Chip (SoC) for capsule endoscopy. This award-winning technology boasts ultra-high-speed transmission capabilities that exceed traditional systems by more than seven times. It delivers significantly clearer image quality and improved diagnostic accuracy, while being 42% smaller than previous designs. This advancement allows for more comfortable examinations without the need for anaesthesia and reduces the risk of infection.
The Automated Diamond Colour Grading system represents another significant leap forward. Using internal reference standards, this high-precision machine achieves an accuracy of ±0.5 grade, eliminating errors common in traditional grading methods. By enabling continuous evaluation on production lines, it sets a new standard in the diamond industry.
ASTRI’s Drone Technology for Urban Parcel Delivery addresses the challenges of traditional delivery systems in congested urban areas. Incorporating advanced positioning systems such as GNSS-RTK and inertial navigation algorithms, this solution ensures reliable operation even in signal-obstructed environments. It significantly enhances delivery speed, particularly for emergency medical purposes, by avoiding urban traffic.
The institute also presented its Smart Optical Precision Positioning System for Modular Integrated Construction (MiC). Utilizing non-visible light communication (nVLC) and edge computing, this system enables real-time tracking of construction components. Features like path prediction and operational assistance improve construction quality and decision-making processes.
In response to the increasing sophistication of digital fraud, ASTRI has developed a Fraud Detection and Awareness Game. As fraudsters increasingly use generative AI tools for deception, this interactive game educates visitors about identifying real versus AI-generated images, thereby raising public awareness of digital fraud risks.
Lastly, ASTRI’s All-In-One Tech Showcase offers an immersive experience for visitors to explore innovations in AI, smart mobility, smart cities, and more. Unlike traditional static displays, this interactive installation encourages engagement with various cutting-edge developments across research and development areas.
The InnoCarnival not only highlights ASTRI’s research achievements but also aims to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in innovation and technology. Ir Dr Suen expressed hope that the event will motivate young people to unlock their potential in these fields.
