Taiwan’s President Lai Advocates for Stronger Defense Measures
Taiwan’s President William Lai emphasized the importance of strengthening national defense as a means of deterrence rather than provocation during a ceremony at the Presidential Office in Taipei. He stated that bolstering the country’s military capabilities is essential for safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy and freedom, especially in light of ongoing threats from China.
Lai described the current geopolitical environment, highlighting China’s continued use of “gray zone” tactics, which involve military intimidation in the waters and airspace surrounding Taiwan. “Its actions are designed to put pressure on our troops, while they also threaten regional security and disrupt global economic development,” he said. He underscored the necessity for Taiwan to demonstrate resolute determination in protecting its sovereignty against potential annexation or invasion.
Investment in Peace Through Military Modernization
President Lai articulated a vision for enhancing Taiwan’s military capabilities, stating that investing in armed forces equates to investing in peace. He pledged to boost Taiwan’s asymmetrical warfare capabilities by integrating advanced technologies and modernizing military structures. “We shall introduce new training methods, new strategic concepts, new equipment and new technologies to modernize Taiwan’s military and make it more flexible,” he said.
Lai urged the armed forces to work collaboratively toward these objectives, ensuring that the concepts are implemented across every unit. The commitment to modernization reflects Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to adapt to evolving security challenges in the region.
During the ceremony, Lai recognized four military officers who were promoted to the rank of major general for their exemplary service. Liang Ting-wei received commendation for his leadership in relief and recovery operations in Hualien County following Typhoon Ragasa last month. Lee Chen-hua, an air force officer, earned his promotion for his significant contributions in redesigning and deploying air routes.
Additionally, Hu Chih-hua, a Mirage fighter pilot, was acknowledged for his outstanding flying record and participation in air show demonstrations. Lo Wei-chung was promoted for overseeing reforms at the National Defense University in Taoyuan, along with successful student recruitment efforts and curriculum improvements.
Lai’s remarks and the promotions reflect Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in the face of external pressures. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, Taiwan aims to assert its sovereignty and protect its democratic values through strategic military enhancements.
