South Korea and US Finalize Talks to Release Detained Workers

South Korea has successfully concluded negotiations with the United States regarding the release of Korean workers detained during an immigration raid in Georgia. According to Kang Hun-sik, the Presidential Chief of Staff, a plane will transport the workers home once the necessary administrative procedures are finalized.

The raid, which took place at a Hyundai Motor manufacturing facility, is noted as the largest single-site enforcement operation by the Department of Homeland Security in its history. This initiative forms part of the broader immigration enforcement efforts under the administration of Donald Trump, aimed at tightening immigration policies. During the operation, over 300 South Koreans were among the 475 individuals arrested at the facility.

In response to the situation, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ordered immediate action on September 7, 2023, to address the arrests. The South Korean government is now exploring ways to enhance the visa system for its workers traveling to the US, which aims to prevent such incidents in the future.

As reported by CNN on September 7, 2023, there is speculation that Donald Trump may visit South Korea in October for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) event. This visit would come on the heels of a significant trade agreement between the two nations, which includes a substantial US$350 billion fund designed to support Korean companies entering the US market.

A video released by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) depicted the chaos following the raid, showing Asian workers being shackled and transported on buses. The footage illustrated hundreds of workers gathered outside the facility, some wearing yellow vests labeled with company names such as “Hyundai” and “LG CNS”. Notably, two workers attempted to evade capture by hiding in a nearby pond before they were apprehended.

The South Korean government’s proactive approach in seeking to improve immigration processes reflects a commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad. As the situation evolves, both nations will likely continue to navigate the complexities of immigration policy and international labor relations.
