Singapore to Destroy 2025 General Election Ballot Papers

In Singapore, the Elections Department (ELD) announced that all ballot papers and related documents from the 2025 General Election will be destroyed on November 22, 2025. This action follows the provisions set out in the Parliamentary Elections Act, which mandates that such materials be securely stored for a period of six months post-election.

The ballot papers and documents are currently held in depository boxes at the Supreme Court of Singapore. During the six-month retention period, these boxes can only be opened by a court order. This measure is in place to protect the secrecy of the vote, ensuring that any allegations of fraud can be thoroughly investigated without compromising voter privacy.

Secure Destruction Process

On the scheduled date, the stored materials will be transported to the Tuas South Incineration Plant for destruction. The ELD has stated that it will invite candidates or their representatives to witness the destruction process, promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral system.

The General Election, held on May 3, 2025, saw a significant turnout, with a total of 2,438,610 votes cast, representing 92.8 percent of registered electors. This figure includes both local and overseas votes, although 42,945 votes were rejected during the counting process.

Election Results Overview

The results of the election confirmed a continued mandate for the ruling People’s Action Party, which secured 65.6 percent of the vote, winning 87 out of 97 seats in Parliament. The opposition Workers’ Party garnered 15 percent of the votes, claiming the remaining 10 seats.
