Heavy Traffic Anticipated at Singapore-Malaysia Checkpoints
Significant traffic congestion is expected at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints during the upcoming September school holidays. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has indicated that from September 5 to September 15, 2023, travellers should prepare for extended waiting times at these border crossings. The ICA is advising those planning to travel during this peak period to check real-time traffic conditions before setting out.
To alleviate congestion, the ICA suggests that travellers consider using cross-border bus services. Additionally, for a smoother immigration process, they encourage the use of QR codes generated by the MyICA mobile app for passport-less clearance, while still reminding individuals to carry their passports, as they may be required for entry into other countries.
Recent Traveller Volume Highlights
During the recent National Day weekend from August 8 to August 11, 2023, nearly 2 million travellers crossed the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. The peak day was August 8, when over 558,000 travellers cleared immigration in a single day. Those travelling by car faced delays of up to three hours due to tailbacks from Malaysia.
As part of their travel preparations, the ICA reminds all travellers to ensure that their passports have a minimum validity of six months. For short-term visitors, including those with in-principle approvals for long-term passes, it is mandatory to submit the Singapore Arrival Card along with a health declaration through the MyICA app within three days before arriving in Singapore.
Essential Compliance and Travel Guidelines
Singapore permanent residents who have renewed their passports must ensure that their re-entry permits are transferred to their new documents. Long-term pass holders are also required to update the ICA or the Ministry of Manpower regarding any changes to their passport details before re-entering Singapore.
Motorists are advised to verify the validity of their Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), as drivers without a valid Autopass card, the VEP approval email from the Land Transport Authority, or valid insurance will be denied entry. Additionally, travellers should settle any outstanding fines with relevant government agencies, as those with unpaid fines may face entry denial.
The ICA has reiterated the importance of adhering to regulations regarding prohibited and controlled items. They are seeking cooperation from travellers to observe traffic rules and maintain lane discipline. The ICA has also emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone who fails to comply with officers’ instructions or commits offences at the checkpoints.
As the September school holidays approach, the ICA aims to ensure that travellers are well-informed and prepared for their journeys, minimizing delays and enhancing safety at Singapore-Malaysia land checkpoints.
