EU Calls for Peace in Taiwan Strait During Parliamentary Meeting

Members of the European Parliament’s China delegation underscored the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait during a meeting in Brussels on October 19, 2023. This gathering marked the first official EU-China parliamentary meeting since 2018 and highlighted the EU’s commitment to addressing tensions in the region.

In a statement issued by the Bureau of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the European representatives emphasized that maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait is crucial not only for the EU but also for global stability. The statement specifically noted that the EU rejects any unilateral attempts to alter the current status quo, particularly through the use of force or coercion.

The EU affirmed its intention to continue fostering close cooperation with Taiwan while adhering to its one China policy. The delegation’s statement also addressed the issue of misrepresentation surrounding UN Resolution 2758, adopted during the 26th UN General Assembly in 1971. This resolution has been leveraged by Beijing to assert its claim of sovereignty over Taiwan, resulting in the Republic of China losing its seat at the United Nations.

The statement clarified the EU’s stance, indicating that it will not accept distortions regarding Resolution 2758. According to the EU, the resolution does not imply that Taiwan is a part of China nor grants the PRC the authority to represent Taiwan in any international forum.

The Chinese government contends that Resolution 2758 designates the PRC as the “sole legal government representing the whole of China,” which includes the “Taiwan region.” However, Taiwan has consistently challenged this interpretation, arguing that the resolution does not support China’s claim over the island.

The ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait continue to draw international attention, particularly from the United States, which has accused Beijing of employing coercive measures to isolate Taiwan from the global community. The remarks from the European Parliament delegation reflect a growing concern among international lawmakers regarding stability in this critical region.

As the EU seeks to navigate its relationship with both China and Taiwan, the emphasis on peaceful dialogue and cooperation signals a strategic approach to balancing interests in a complex geopolitical landscape.
