BJP Strengthens Position in Kerala Local Elections Ahead of 2026
The recent local body elections in Kerala have significantly bolstered the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) presence in the state, setting the stage for the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026. The outcome indicates a shift in political dynamics, with the BJP emerging as a potential third force alongside the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to voters in Kerala, stating, “Kerala is fed up of the UDF and LDF. They saw NDA as the only option that can deliver good governance.” His remarks, shared in Malayalam on X, reflect the BJP’s strategy to position itself as a viable alternative in a state traditionally dominated by the Left and Congress.
In the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, the BJP has made notable gains over recent election cycles. In the last three Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has consistently pushed the Left candidates to third place, with Shashi Tharoor of the Congress winning since his debut in 2009. Tharoor initially defeated Communist Party of India’s P. Ramachandran Nair by nearly 100,000 votes. However, by 2014, the BJP’s O. Rajagopal reduced the margin to approximately 15,000 votes, indicating a tightening race. In 2019, Tharoor managed to hold his ground with a similar victory margin.
In the latest parliamentary contest, BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar lost to Tharoor by just 16,000 votes, reflecting a vote swing of over 4.2 percent, primarily at Tharoor’s expense. Notably, the BJP did not secure any of the seven Assembly seats in the 2021 elections within this constituency. However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP led in three of these segments, showcasing a significant shift in voter sentiment.
BJP Gains Ground in Thrissur and Local Bodies
In the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, BJP’s Suresh Gopi claimed victory in 2024 with a margin of approximately 74,700 votes over his nearest opponent from the Left. This marks a remarkable turnaround, as Gopi had previously finished a distant third in earlier elections. In the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, he led in six of the seven Assembly segments, despite failing to win any of these seats in the previous Vidhan Sabha elections.
The recent local body elections revealed substantial consolidation for the BJP across Village, Block, and District Panchayats, as well as in Municipalities and Corporations. The BJP’s Muslim candidate, Mumtaz, notably won the Kannankulangara ward in Thrissur, taking the seat from Congress.
While the BJP has strengthened its foothold, the UDF emerged as the dominant force overall, winning the majority of local bodies statewide. The LDF, which currently governs, has fallen behind in this electoral contest. This dynamic creates a complex landscape, as the Congress and the Left continue to compete aggressively, even as they participate in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) at the national level.
The results from the 2025 local body elections indicate a clear anti-incumbency sentiment against the LDF, while the UDF shows signs of resurgence. The BJP’s steady rise suggests it is gradually establishing itself as a significant player in Kerala’s political arena.
As the final tallies are confirmed, analysts will closely examine vote transfer patterns between the UDF and NDA. Observers will seek to understand shifts in urban and rural wards, especially in Muslim-majority and coastal constituencies. Additionally, it remains to be seen whether the BJP’s gains stem from a shift in voter preference or the fragmentation of opposition support. The evolving political landscape in Kerala is sure to influence strategies leading into the Assembly elections in 2026.
