Acharya Devvrat will take the oath of office as the new Governor of Maharashtra on September 18, 2023. The ceremony is set to occur at 11 a.m. in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. This appointment follows the recent resignation of former Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, who stepped down on September 11 after being elected as the Vice President of India.

Devvrat, currently the Governor of Gujarat since 2019, was assigned the additional role by President Droupadi Murmu. An official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed, “Consequent upon demitting the office of Governor of Maharashtra by C.P. Radhakrishnan due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties.”

A Journey to Mumbai

On the morning of September 17, Devvrat traveled from Ahmedabad to Mumbai on the Tejas Express, accompanied by his wife, Darshana Devi. The journey marks a significant transition as he prepares to take on the responsibilities of his new role in Maharashtra.

At 66 years old, Acharya Devvrat has a diverse background as a former educator and an active member of the Arya Samaj. Before his gubernatorial role, he was the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana, and he has a rich academic foundation with a master’s degree in History and Hindi, along with a diploma in Yoga Science.

Focus on Sustainable Practices

In addition to overseeing Maharashtra, Devvrat also holds the position of Vice Chancellor at several universities in Gujarat. He is well-known for his advocacy of natural farming and improvements in cattle breeding, promoting sustainable agricultural practices throughout his tenure.

His appointment comes on the heels of Radhakrishnan’s election as the 15th Vice President of India. Radhakrishnan was elected with a total of 452 votes, defeating the Opposition candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. Radhakrishnan was sworn in during a formal ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 12, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar.

As Acharya Devvrat prepares to take office, many are looking forward to his leadership and the initiatives he will pursue in Maharashtra. His extensive experience in governance and education may provide a solid foundation for addressing the challenges facing the state.
