Taiwanese Series “The Outlaw Doctor” Wins Big at Global OTT Awards
Taiwan’s acclaimed crime drama, The Outlaw Doctor (化外之醫), emerged victorious at the Global OTT Awards held in Busan, South Korea, securing the award for best Asian content. Additionally, actress Suri Lin (林廷憶) was honored as the best new actress during the ceremony on October 22, 2023. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a Taiwanese production has won this prestigious award since its inception in 2019.
Producer Tang Sheng-jung (湯昇榮) expressed his gratitude upon receiving feedback from several international jurors who praised the series. He noted that their appreciation reaffirmed his decision to set the narrative against a backdrop of cross-border crime, a theme that resonated with audiences globally. The series has garnered attention not only in Taiwan but also across international markets, highlighting its universal appeal.
Suri Lin received recognition for her role in Netflix’s series Born for the Spotlight (影后), where she portrayed Shih Ai-ma (史艾瑪), an actress whose talents are discovered by her agent, Ms. Chubby (胖姐), played by Chung Hsin-ling (鍾欣凌). The award presentation was a heartfelt moment as Chung, who presented the award to Lin, echoed their on-screen relationship, further enhancing the significance of the occasion.
In sharing the award with South Korean actress Chung Su-bin, recognized for her performance in the series Friendly Rivalry, Lin took a moment during her acceptance speech to acknowledge the contributions of the show’s director, Yen Yi-wen (嚴藝文). She expressed her gratitude, stating, “With Born for the Spotlight, you make so many people feel seen and heard and understood, including me. So, thank you for that.” Her words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the personal impact of the series.
The Global OTT Awards celebrate excellence in television, OTT, and digital content from around the world. Co-hosted by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Busan Metropolitan City, the awards are part of the International Streaming Festival 2025. This year’s event highlighted the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping global entertainment, with The Outlaw Doctor standing out as a prime example of innovative storytelling.
With these accolades, Taiwan’s film industry continues to gain recognition on the international stage, paving the way for future productions to shine in the global arena.
