Singapore’s PM Wong Congratulates Thailand’s New Leader Anutin Charnvirakul
On September 8, 2023, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong extended his congratulations to Thailand’s newly elected Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul following his victory in the parliamentary vote. Anutin received a majority of 311 votes, defeating Chaikasem Nitisiri from the Pheu Thai Party in the first prime ministerial election held in parliament since 2019.
In his letter to Anutin, Wong highlighted the significance of the year 2025, which will mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Thailand. He expressed his “warmest congratulations” and emphasized the enduring partnership between the two nations.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Wong noted that the recent signing of the Implementation Agreement on Carbon Credits Collaboration exemplifies the robust ties between Singapore and Thailand. This agreement is Singapore’s first with an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member state and reflects both countries’ commitment to sustainable development and climate action.
“This reflects our joint commitment to sustainable development and advancing the green transition,” Wong wrote. He added that the collaboration demonstrates how Singapore and Thailand can lead regional efforts in tackling climate issues.
Wong expressed optimism that the relationship between the two countries will “continue to grow in breadth and depth” under Anutin’s leadership. He mentioned several areas for potential collaboration, including the digital economy, innovation, connectivity, and food security.
Political Context and Future Outlook
Anutin’s ascent to power follows the dismissal of his predecessor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was removed from office on August 29 by Thailand’s Constitutional Court due to ethical violations related to a leaked phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. Anutin, who previously held various ministerial roles, including health minister, is best known for spearheading the decriminalization of cannabis in Thailand in 2022.
As the nation’s third leader in two years, Anutin’s coalition government faces the challenge of addressing political stability. His coalition’s backing is contingent on his commitment to dissolve parliament within four months, paving the way for fresh elections.
In closing, Wong invited Anutin to visit Singapore at the earliest opportunity, expressing eagerness to meet his counterpart soon. “I wish you every success in your new role,” Wong stated, reinforcing the importance of their bilateral relationship amid evolving regional dynamics.
