Saint Vincent Prime Minister Affirms Taiwan Ties, Assures Students
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan has expressed strong support for a recent statement made by the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Godwin Friday, regarding the continuation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During a radio interview, Friday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to maintaining its long-standing ties with Taiwan, a relationship that has endured since 1981.
In a broadcast on Boom 106.9 FM, Friday emphasized, “Our diplomatic relations with Taiwan remain, as do our relations with all countries with which we have diplomatic ties.” This declaration was reported in a Vincentian news outlet on March 18, 2023, following his recent assumption of office on November 28, 2022. The Prime Minister’s remarks came as a reassurance to Vincentian students studying in Taiwan, many of whom benefit from scholarships provided by the Taiwanese government. He assured them that their educational opportunities would not be compromised.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement welcoming Friday’s commitment, highlighting the importance of the diplomatic relationship that has developed over several decades. The ministry noted that since taking office, Friday has consistently affirmed SVG’s dedication to its ties with Taiwan and has maintained active communication with Taiwan’s embassy in Kingstown.
Friday’s New Democratic Party, which gained power after winning 14 of the 15 parliamentary seats in the November elections, previously suggested a potential shift in recognition from Taipei to Beijing. However, Friday did not address this topic during his election campaign. The change in leadership marks a significant political shift in SVG, ending a 24-year tenure under former Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated its intention to continue fostering close collaboration with the SVG government, aiming to enhance bilateral cooperation that would benefit both nations. This commitment reflects Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international partnerships, particularly with allies in the Caribbean.
The announcement by Prime Minister Friday is a significant affirmation of SVG’s diplomatic stance and showcases the enduring relationship between the two nations, which has navigated various political landscapes over the years.
