MercuriX Racing Triumphs at 2025 STEM Racing Nationals, Heads to World Championship
MercuriX Racing has achieved a significant milestone by winning the 2025 Singapore National STEM Racing Championship. This victory marks the team’s second year of participation, where they competed against 14 teams from seven schools. Not only did MercuriX Racing secure the national title, but they also claimed the Knockout Racing Championship and the Best Video Presentation Award. Their exceptional performance has earned them the opportunity to represent Singapore at the 2026 World STEM Racing Championship.
Understanding the World of STEM Racing
STEM Racing, formerly known as F1 in Schools and supported by Formula 1®, is an international competition aimed at students aged 9 to 19. Participants design and manufacture miniature race cars using advanced CAD/CAM tools. Beyond engineering, the competition emphasizes innovation, collaboration, brand development, fundraising, and effective management skills, equipping students with competencies applicable in various professional fields.
The MercuriX Racing team, representing North London Collegiate School (Singapore), consists of six dedicated members: Samuel (Team Manager), Braxton (Head of Engineering), Kerri (Manufacture Engineer), Yarun (Research Engineer), Evie (Head of Enterprise), and Denise (Head of Graphic Design). Each member played a crucial role in creating a disciplined and communicative team focused on precision and collaboration.
Evie, the Head of Enterprise, expressed pride in the team’s cohesive identity, stating, “Seeing our identity come together across the portfolio, merchandise, social media, and pit display made all the long nights worth it.” Research Engineer Yarun added, “It taught us the importance of how a strong team isn’t defined by job titles but by trust, collaboration, and being there for each other.”
Innovative Engineering and Teamwork
This year’s competition posed significant technical challenges, with many second-year teams vying for the national title and a place at the World Finals. MercuriX Racing rose to the occasion, utilizing advanced tools such as Autodesk Fusion and ANSYS to simulate aerodynamics, refine structures, and evaluate performance variables before manufacturing. The final car was produced through a combination of CNC machining and 3D printing, resulting in a sleek design that stood out.
Kerri, the Manufacture Engineer, noted the difficulties of maintaining high performance while adhering to strict regulations. The team approached this challenge through an iterative engineering process of rapid prototyping and continuous simulation. Samuel, the Team Manager, reflected on their experience, stating, “Through the multiple iterations of the car, we had multiple ‘eureka’ moments that led to failure, but this experience taught us resilience and the value of further refining our ideas.”
In addition to their engineering success, the team developed a compelling enterprise pitch and a unified brand identity centered around their slogan, “Unleashing Speed and Engineering Excellence.” Denise highlighted the unique team culture that fostered support beyond assigned roles, stating that this flexibility and collaboration enabled them to adapt swiftly during the competition.
Insights from Wilson Law, Head of Design and Engineering at NLCS (Singapore), emphasized the significance of the team’s dedication and the culture of applied learning. He remarked, “STEM Racing reflects the kind of education we believe in at NLCS (Singapore), ambitious, academic, student-led, and grounded in real outcomes.” Law noted that his role, along with his colleagues, was to provide moral support, practical guidance, and the necessary resources for the team to excel.
Looking ahead, MercuriX Racing is preparing for the STEM Racing World Finals 2026. Their objective is to refine their prototype and push the boundaries of their capabilities while representing NLCS (Singapore) with the same commitment to excellence that led to their national victory.
