Lishan Unveils Taiwan’s Tallest Christmas Trees for Winter Solstice
Taiwan celebrated the winter solstice in spectacular fashion as the nation’s two tallest Christmas trees were illuminated last night in Lishan, Taichung. Standing at an impressive 1,956 meters above sea level, these towering cedar trees are part of the ongoing festivities marking the 2025 Lishan-Guguan Light Art Festival, which has become a beloved winter tradition.
The lighting ceremony took place at the plaza in front of the Lishan Guest House, where a vibrant concert added to the festive atmosphere. Performances by local artists including Nasi (李芷婷), Abus (阿布絲), Rock Mom (肉克媽媽), and the band Mix Mountain Goats (山羊樂團) captivated attendees, enhancing the celebration of the season.
These magnificent 28-meter-tall Christmas trees, affectionately referred to as the “Christmas Trees above the Clouds,” will dazzle visitors with a display of meteor-shower-like lights. This enchanting spectacle will occur for three minutes every half hour each night until January 25, 2026. The Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area Headquarters described the lighting as creating an “enchanting alpine atmosphere” that draws visitors from across the region.
The 2025 Lishan-Guguan Light Art Festival, now in its fifth winter season, aims to highlight not only the stunning light installations but also the natural beauty of the area. The Guguan segment of the festival runs from November 29, 2025, to January 11, 2026, featuring a combination of hot springs and scenic walkways, further enriching the experience for guests.
As the festival continues to grow in popularity, it serves as a reminder of Taiwan’s rich cultural traditions and the joy of community celebrations during the winter season. The lighting of the trees in Lishan not only marks a festive occasion but also showcases the beauty and artistry that can be found in this picturesque region.
