Island Hospital Named Malaysia’s First Flagship Medical Tourism Facility
Island Hospital has been officially designated as Malaysia’s first Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance its global medical tourism sector. This recognition, announced on December 9, 2025, by Malaysia’s Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, acknowledges the hospital’s unwavering commitment to quality care, patient safety, and exceptional experiences for international patients.
The FMTH programme, launched in 2022, is a strategic initiative aimed at identifying healthcare institutions capable of catalyzing Malaysia’s growth as a preferred medical tourism destination. Island Hospital emerged as the leading facility among four finalists, notably being the sole representative from Penang. The initiative is spearheaded by the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) and is backed by the Malaysian Government.
To ensure a rigorous evaluation process, independent experts from IQVIA and Joint Commission International (JCI) conducted thorough assessments of various factors, including clinical quality, patient safety, innovation, and operational efficiency. This initiative is part of the broader Malaysia Healthcare Travel Industry Blueprint 2021-2025, aimed at solidifying the country’s reputation as a trusted destination for healthcare services.
Hospital’s Comprehensive Services and Accreditations
Island Hospital is a private specialist facility that caters to complex medical and surgical needs. With over 120 specialist doctors across diverse fields such as cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, and neurology, the hospital has established a robust ecosystem for medical travellers. This includes comprehensive support from pre-arrival coordination to follow-up care, ensuring a seamless experience for both local and international patients.
The hospital’s dedication to quality and patient safety is underscored by accreditations from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) and the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH). Additionally, Island Hospital has achieved recognition as an ACHSI Centre of Excellence in Cancer Care, Cardiology, and Gastroenterology, which highlights its strong framework for clinical governance and patient-centred care.
“We are humbled by this recognition,” stated Lim Kooi Ling, CEO of Island Hospital. “Since 2022, we have welcomed approximately 700,000 international patients from over 80 countries, including more than 100 cities in Indonesia. This demonstrates the trust placed in our teams, our partners, and the Malaysian healthcare system.”
Collaboration for Continued Growth in Medical Tourism
As part of the IHH Healthcare Malaysia network, a leading private healthcare provider, Island Hospital benefits from shared expertise, advanced digital tools, and clinical collaboration. This partnership enhances its ability to deliver safe and reliable care while improving the overall patient experience.
Moving forward, Island Hospital is committed to collaborating with the Government and MHTC to further strengthen Penang’s and Malaysia’s status as preferred destinations for healthcare. The designation as a flagship medical tourism hospital is expected to bolster the country’s appeal to international patients seeking high-quality medical services.
In summary, Island Hospital’s recognition as Malaysia’s first FMTH signals a promising future for the nation’s medical tourism industry, showcasing its dedication to excellence in healthcare and patient satisfaction.
