Gucci Unveils Demna’s Debut Collection Ahead of Milan Fashion Week
Gucci has offered a first look at its new creative director, Demna, revealing his debut collection, “La Famiglia,” on September 22, just ahead of Milan Fashion Week. The luxury brand shared a series of striking images on Instagram, showcasing a variety of styles that blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary flair. This unveiling comes as the fashion industry seeks to rejuvenate its image and sales amidst shifting consumer preferences.
The collection features an eclectic mix of women’s and men’s wear, including sweeping gowns, sharp suits with elongated hems, and oversized silhouettes. Noteworthy elements include bulky shoulders, low-waist trousers, and a selection of handbags designed to evoke a sense of boldness. A statement from Gucci described the collection as ushering in a “new Gucci era: unapologetically sexy, extravagant and daring.”
In response to the preview, Anne-Laure Chansel, a researcher specializing in luxury marketing at EIML business school in Paris, noted, “The comments are already positive: drama is back in a spirit that is 100 percent Gucci.” This enthusiasm reflects the anticipation surrounding Demna’s vision, particularly given his previous success at Balenciaga.
Strategic Release and Global Availability
The “La Famiglia” collection will be available in ten select stores worldwide, including locations in Los Angeles, New York, London, Milan, Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Seoul, and Tokyo. This limited release will occur for two weeks following a premiere film set to launch on September 23.
In an interview with the industry publication WWD, Demna described the Instagram reveal as “baby steps” in his journey with Gucci. “I’m not yet defining my Gucci vision, but the platform on which I build that. I want to reset the understanding and perception of what Gucci is through my reinterpretation,” he stated. He cited the brand’s previous era under designer Tom Ford as a source of inspiration.
Demna’s first official fashion show is scheduled for February 2026, marking a significant milestone in his tenure at the brand. The early reveal of his collection is a departure from traditional practices, where new designs are typically showcased at private runway events. This shift is indicative of fashion brands’ efforts to engage with consumers who are increasingly looking for accessible luxury options, particularly in light of economic challenges.
Industry Context and Challenges
The luxury fashion sector has faced significant hurdles recently, experiencing a decline in sales after nearly a decade of consistent growth. Following an average annual growth rate of 10 percent, the industry encountered a downturn last year, prompting many brands to reassess their leadership and creative strategies. Notably, Gucci reported a staggering 25 percent decline in second-quarter sales in July, highlighting the urgency of its need for revitalization.
In a bid to restore Gucci’s standing, parent company Kering appointed Francesca Bellettini as the new CEO. The appointment aims to steer the brand back toward profitability and relevance within the highly competitive luxury market.
As Demna embarks on this new chapter with Gucci, all eyes will be on how his vision unfolds and whether it can reinvigorate the brand’s appeal among both loyal customers and a new generation of fashion enthusiasts.
