Gan Kim Yong Embarks on First Official Visit to China

Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong of Singapore will make his inaugural official visit to China as Deputy Prime Minister from August 31 to September 4, 2025. His trip includes attending commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II on September 3, following an invitation from the Chinese government. This visit marks a significant moment in Singapore-China relations, coinciding with various diplomatic milestones in 2025.
Engagements in Beijing and Beyond
During his time in Beijing, Mr. Gan is scheduled to participate in a military parade honoring the wartime events, which will also feature notable foreign leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), this visit is not only ceremonial but also aims to deepen bilateral relations through discussions with high-ranking Chinese officials.
In addition to attending the parade, Mr. Gan will meet with Vice President Han Zheng, Vice Premier He Lifeng, and Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao to explore ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries. The PMO stated that these discussions will focus on new opportunities for collaboration and will address both regional and international developments.
Following his Beijing engagements, Mr. Gan will travel to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. In Guangzhou, he will connect with Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong and visit the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City (CSGKC), where he will engage with Singaporean businesses operating in the region. This visit underscores Singapore’s ongoing commitment to fostering economic ties in southern China.
In Shenzhen, Mr. Gan is expected to meet with city officials, including Party Chief Meng Fanli, while also interacting with local businesses and the Singaporean community at a reception.
Historical Context and Future Relations
This visit holds particular significance as it aligns with the upcoming 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China in 2025. Additionally, it marks the 15th anniversary of the CSGKC, a collaborative project designed to enhance knowledge exchange and economic development. The timing of these events provides a platform for both nations to reflect on their historical ties while looking forward to future collaboration.
Mr. Gan previously visited China in 2023, participating in delegations led by then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. His current trip will be accompanied by Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
As Singapore seeks to strengthen its diplomatic and economic ties with China, this visit is poised to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, paving the way for a mutually beneficial relationship in the years to come.
