Bengaluru Airport Prayer Incident Triggers Political Fallout
A video showing individuals performing Namaz at Terminal-2 of Bengaluru International Airport has ignited a political controversy. The incident occurred on November 9, 2023, when a group of people, including family members sending off relatives for the Hajj pilgrimage, conducted their prayers in a high-security area of the airport. The footage has attracted criticism, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), raising questions about security protocols at the airport.
According to airport officials, the prayers took place around noon on Sunday. The video circulating on social media depicts armed security personnel in the vicinity but seemingly ignoring the event. This has led to widespread debate about the appropriateness of allowing prayers in such a sensitive area.
Kumaraswamy, a union minister, responded to the incident by emphasizing the need for designated prayer spaces at the airport. He stated, “Bengaluru city has grown to international standards. Many people visit here, and people of various religions need space to pray. Separate arrangements should be made for this.” His remarks aim to address the concerns over public displays of faith in high-security zones.
The issue has also drawn comments from G. Parameshwara, the state’s Home Minister. When questioned about the apparent double standards regarding public gatherings, particularly in light of recent restrictions on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Path Sanchalan events, he assured that he would investigate the matter further.
Meanwhile, Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and IT, defended the actions of the attendees. He pointed out that the airport has facilities for prayer for all religions and criticized the BJP for previously seeking legal action against such activities. “No one can perform these activities without permission in public places,” he emphasized, insisting that any prayer should not disrupt public order.
In a strong reaction, Vijay Prasad, a spokesperson for the BJP in Karnataka, questioned the legitimacy of the prayer gathering. He asked, “How is this even allowed inside Terminal-2 of Bengaluru International Airport?” He further challenged state leaders, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, to clarify their stance on the incident.
The controversy highlights underlying tensions regarding religious practices in public spaces, particularly in areas with heightened security. As debates continue, the demand for a dedicated prayer area at Bengaluru International Airport appears to be gaining traction, suggesting that the incident may prompt broader discussions about inclusivity and security in public spaces.
As the situation unfolds, the Karnataka government will need to navigate these complex issues to maintain both public order and respect for diverse religious practices.
