Young Innovators Create Solutions for Diabetes and Cervical Cancer

Two young innovators, Zoey Chan and Gunika Jain, are making strides in the fight against diabetes and cervical cancer with their groundbreaking inventions. Despite being in their early twenties and lacking formal medical training, the pair has developed innovative solutions aimed at improving early detection and management of these pressing health issues. Their work has garnered recognition, culminating in awards from the prestigious James Dyson Award 2025.
Chan, aged 23, has designed Nido, a compact insulin organiser that simplifies daily injections for individuals with diabetes. This tool addresses a common challenge faced by diabetic patients, ensuring they can administer insulin safely and conveniently without fumbling with needles. Meanwhile, Jain, 21, has created Chhavi, a self-testing kit for human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the primary cause of cervical cancer. This innovative product empowers women to screen for HPV in the privacy of their homes, challenging the stigma that often prevents them from seeking medical care.
Both inventions emerged from personal experiences and community needs. Chan’s journey with Type 1 diabetes began when she was diagnosed at the age of 20, following a week-long hospitalization. Initially grappling with denial and the fear of stigma, she often administered insulin injections in secret. “I didn’t want to be perceived as sick and needing special help,” she reflected. The cumbersome process of managing her diabetes motivated her to create Nido, which allows users to store needles safely and administer injections in various settings without the risk of accidental pricks.
Jain’s inspiration for Chhavi stemmed from alarming statistics about cervical cancer in India, where a woman dies from the disease every eight minutes. Her research revealed that many women in rural areas are unaware of cervical cancer or refuse to seek screenings due to societal pressures. “In rural India, if you have cervical cancer, many believe you are possessed,” Jain noted. To combat these misconceptions, she developed Chhavi, which facilitates self-testing through a simple and discreet process, providing results in minutes.
Both inventions have received accolades for their potential to change lives. Chan was named the national winner of the James Dyson Award, receiving S$8,400 to further develop Nido, while Jain was recognized as one of two national runners-up. Both women are now in contention for the Global Top 20 of the James Dyson Award, with the shortlist to be announced on October 15, and winners revealed on November 5.
While both Chan and Jain’s inventions are still in the prototype stage and require further testing, they are optimistic about making their products commercially available. Their commitment extends beyond invention; they aim to raise awareness about the health issues they address. Chan aspires to challenge misconceptions surrounding Type 1 diabetes, emphasizing that it is a genetic condition and not a consequence of poor lifestyle choices. “We simply want to lead full, enriching lives,” she stated.
Jain seeks to normalize discussions surrounding women’s health, particularly concerning cervical cancer. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in design at LASALLE College of the Arts and is exploring related health issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome. “I believe everybody’s body is equally important. Once we start talking about it openly, something can be done,” she said, highlighting the importance of accessible medical devices that cater to women’s needs.
The innovative efforts of Chan and Jain reflect a broader movement towards addressing health disparities through design and advocacy. Their products not only aim to improve the lives of individuals facing diabetes and cervical cancer but also serve as catalysts for societal change, empowering communities to confront health issues openly and without shame.
