Ms. Diandra Andersen, a counsellor at New Leaf Counselling and Integrative Health, explains that the brain’s amygdala, which governs emotional processing, can trigger a “fight, flight or freeze” response when it perceives a threat. This automatic reaction can lead to chronic stress and dysregulation of the nervous system.

Somatic therapy offers a pathway for individuals who may find it difficult to articulate their experiences verbally. By focusing on the body’s responses, clients can process trauma in manageable steps. Ms. Andersen points out that this method can help alleviate the heightened sense of urgency associated with trauma responses, allowing individuals to regain a sense of control and connection with their bodies.

Dr. Kimberly Chew, a principal clinical psychologist at AO Psychology, highlights that somatic therapy helps clients understand and regulate their nervous systems by paying attention to physical sensations, tension, and breathing patterns. “When the body doesn’t complete its fight, flight, or freeze responses, that activation gets stored as tension, hypervigilance, or numbness,” Dr. Chew explains.

Benefits and Precautions of Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy may be particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced developmental trauma, chronic stress, burnout, or symptoms of anxiety and panic. It can also assist those who feel disconnected from their bodies, even when they have gained cognitive insights through other therapeutic methods.

While somatic therapy offers numerous benefits, experts caution that it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals in acute medical distress, those grappling with active addiction, or those in a state of psychological overwhelm may need a more gradual introduction to this approach. Ms. Andersen emphasizes that trauma processing should be paced appropriately to avoid overwhelming clients.

“It is crucial for somatic therapy to be facilitated by trained, certified, and trauma-informed therapists,” Ms. Ling advises. “The greatest risk arises when the process moves faster than the body’s capacity, overwhelming a system that cannot yet stay connected.”

In a typical somatic therapy session, clients engage in somatic tracking, which involves becoming aware of their body’s signals and sensations. Therapists guide them through small body-based movements, such as deep breathing or grounding exercises. This method aims to help clients release trapped energy and restore balance.

Dr. Chew notes that effective somatic therapy sessions can lead to significant improvements in emotional regulation, stress recovery, and overall well-being. “You know somatic therapy is working when your body starts responding to life from a place of safety rather than survival,” she adds.

Ultimately, somatic therapy functions as a complementary approach to traditional therapies, integrating well with other methods. Ms. Ling explains that while some individuals may benefit from verbal exploration through talk therapy, others may find grounding and physical awareness more effective at different points in their healing journey.
