Kevin Keegan Diagnosed with Cancer, Newcastle United Confirms
Former England forward and manager Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer, according to a statement from his former club, Newcastle United, on January 7, 2024. Keegan was admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms, which led to the cancer diagnosis. He is set to undergo treatment as he navigates this challenging health issue.
Keegan, 74, is celebrated for his remarkable playing career, which included significant achievements at both Liverpool and Hamburg. He won three First Division titles at Liverpool, along with a European Cup, two UEFA Cups, and an FA Cup. After his time in England, he moved to Germany, where he secured the Bundesliga title with Hamburg and was honored as European Footballer of the Year twice. Following his successful stint abroad, he returned to England, playing for Southampton before rejoining Newcastle.
Keegan’s Impact on Football
Known affectionately as “King Kev,” Keegan scored a remarkable 204 goals in 592 league appearances during his club career. He earned 63 caps for the England national team, netting 21 goals, and served as captain on 31 occasions. His impact extended beyond the pitch; as a manager, he had two notable spells at Newcastle United, where he led the team to the Premier League runners-up position in the 1995-96 season, finishing second to Manchester United despite holding the top spot for much of the campaign.
In 1999, Keegan took over as manager of the England national team, succeeding Glenn Hoddle. His tenure was marked by disappointment as England failed to progress beyond the group stage at Euro 2000. He departed from the role later that year after a loss to Germany in the final match at the old Wembley Stadium.
Community Support for Keegan
As news of Keegan’s diagnosis spreads, tributes and well-wishes from fans, former teammates, and fellow professionals have poured in, highlighting his significant contributions to football. Newcastle United expressed their support for Keegan, emphasizing the impact he has had on the club and the sport as a whole.
Keegan’s legacy in football remains influential, and as he embarks on this new chapter in his life, the football community stands ready to support him through his treatment and recovery.
