India and Afghanistan Sign $100 Million Pharmaceutical MoU
Indian and Afghan pharmaceutical companies have signed a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) valued at $100 million, aimed at enhancing the supply of medicines to Afghanistan. The agreement was formalized at the Afghan Consulate in Dubai between Afghanistan’s Raoufi Global Group Company and India’s Zydus Lifesciences. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the ongoing medicine shortages in Afghanistan.
Under the terms of the agreement, Zydus Lifesciences will begin by exporting medications to Afghanistan. The Indian firm also plans to transfer technical knowledge and expertise to local partners, fostering the development of Afghanistan’s pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, Zydus intends to relocate its representative office to Afghanistan and aims to establish domestic drug production in the country.
Noor Jalal Jalali, Afghanistan’s Health Minister, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the Ministry of Health is actively collaborating with international partners to mitigate the country’s persistent medicine shortages. “We are optimistic that these efforts will soon lead to improvements in healthcare access,” he noted.
The MoU follows earlier discussions between Afghan Trade Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi, where they focused on strengthening bilateral trade relations, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. This agreement represents a significant stride toward enhancing healthcare access and bolstering local pharmaceutical capabilities in Afghanistan.
As Afghanistan continues to grapple with healthcare challenges, initiatives like this MoU are vital for ensuring that the population has reliable access to essential medicines. With the support of Indian pharmaceutical expertise, Afghanistan is set to take important steps toward self-sufficiency in drug production, which is critical for the nation’s health and wellbeing.
