HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital Unite to Enhance Proton Therapy
In a significant advancement for cancer treatment, HKSH Medical Group and the Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on December 11, 2025. This agreement, established under the auspices of the National Cancer Center, aims to enhance proton therapy techniques, which are crucial to the Healthy China 2030 initiative focused on improving cancer care.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Walton LI, Chief Executive Officer of HKSH Medical Group, and Professor WANG Luhua, Director of Shenzhen Cancer Hospital. They were joined by Mr. Wyman LI, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH, and Professor HE Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center, who witnessed the signing.
Strengthening Collaborative Cancer Care
This partnership is designed to enhance collaborative efforts in clinical applications of proton therapy, specialist training, and cancer management research. By reinforcing HKSH’s collaborative efforts with the National Cancer Center, the initiative addresses the growing demand for precision cancer treatment, ensuring alignment with national health strategies.
Proton therapy is increasingly recognized for its high precision and reduced side effects, making it a pivotal approach in improving cancer survival rates. The ongoing Healthy China 2030 plan underscores the importance of such advancements in healthcare.
In support of this collaboration, HKSH previously co-hosted the Proton Therapy Joint Training Programme in Beijing in June 2025, further solidifying its commitment to training and innovation in cancer treatment. The institution also launched a ten-month HKSH Proton Training Programme in August and hosted the annual conference of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Cooperative Group in November.
Goals and Future Directions
During the signing ceremony, Dr. LI emphasized HKSH’s role as the first proton therapy center in the Greater Bay Area. He stated, “HKSH not only meets the significant local and regional demand for precise cancer treatment but also draws upon its extensive clinical and talent training experience.” The collaboration with Shenzhen Cancer Hospital aims to leverage these strengths to enhance treatment outcomes for patients.
Professor HE Jie noted the cooperation’s significance in implementing the Healthy China strategy. He remarked, “By integrating high-quality medical resources from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, we are establishing an internationally aligned platform for cancer prevention and treatment.”
The partnership is expected to deepen the integration of healthcare management, talent development, and research innovation. Mr. Wyman LI highlighted that this collaboration would enhance the capabilities of cancer prevention and treatment across the Greater Bay Area and throughout China.
Professor WANG Luhua elaborated on the hospital’s mission, stating that it aims to extend its reach across South China while connecting with regions like Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. He emphasized that the collaboration with HKSH would facilitate deeper engagement in clinical methodologies and research innovation.
The MOU lays the groundwork for both parties to pursue short-term and long-term collaborations, share best practices in healthcare, and enhance cancer care services to meet international standards. This partnership also promises mutual assistance in advanced cancer treatment protocols and clinical trials, aiming to set a benchmark for comprehensive cancer care across the region.
