HKSH and Shenzhen Cancer Hospital Forge Alliance for Proton Therapy
On December 11, 2025, the HKSH Medical Group and the Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen formalised their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This partnership aims to enhance the application of proton therapy in cancer treatment, aligning with China’s national initiative to advance healthcare technology.
Collaboration Aims to Enhance Cancer Treatment
The MOU was signed by Dr. Walton Li, Chief Executive Officer of HKSH Medical Group, and Professor Wang Luhua, Director of Shenzhen Cancer Hospital. The event was attended by key figures including Mr. Wyman Li, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH, and Professor He Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center.
This collaboration is part of the broader Healthy China 2030 initiative, which seeks to improve cancer survival rates through innovative treatments. Proton therapy is increasingly recognised for its precision and reduced side effects, making it a crucial component of cancer management strategies.
In June 2025, HKSH co-hosted the Proton Therapy Joint Training Programme in Beijing, demonstrating its commitment to education in cancer treatment. The establishment of the HKSH Proton Training Programme in August further underscores the group’s dedication to developing expertise in this advanced medical field. Additionally, HKSH organised the annual conference of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Cooperative Group in November, bringing together leading experts to discuss advancements in proton therapy.
Strengthening Regional Healthcare Collaboration
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Li highlighted HKSH’s role as the first proton therapy centre in the Greater Bay Area and the only facility in Hong Kong dedicated to this technology. He stated, “We are dedicated to training leading medical professionals and promoting high-level research initiatives.” This partnership not only aims to meet local demand but also positions HKSH as a reference point for proton therapy advancements across China.
Professor He Jie remarked that the cooperation exemplifies the implementation of the Healthy China strategy. By merging resources from Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the collaboration sets a precedent for establishing a robust cancer prevention and treatment system in the region.
Mr. Wyman Li emphasised the integration of healthcare management, talent development, and research innovation as fundamental goals of this partnership. He stated, “This synergy will accelerate the exchange of advanced cancer treatment technologies and management practices, ultimately enhancing patient care across both regions.”
Professor Wang Luhua added that this partnership will enable Shenzhen Cancer Hospital to extend its reach across South China, connecting with Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, while also looking towards Southeast Asia. The collaboration is designed to enhance clinical methodologies, research innovation, and healthcare management, which are vital for improving cancer prevention and treatment capabilities.
The MOU sets the stage for both institutions to engage in both short-term and long-term projects, sharing best practices in healthcare and medical talent development. They will also collaborate on advanced cancer treatment protocols and clinical trials, ensuring that their services meet international standards.
This alliance not only signifies a commitment to improving cancer care but also reflects the ongoing efforts to integrate high-quality medical resources in the Greater Bay Area, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare providers alike.
