The 46th edition of **Fit India Sundays on Cycle**, themed “Pedal for Clean Air,” witnessed nearly **500 participants** cycling through New Delhi, while thousands more joined from over **10,000 locations** nationwide on **November 2, 2023**. This initiative, aimed at promoting both fitness and environmental awareness, is a collaboration among the **Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)**, the **Centre for Science and Environment (CSE)**, and the **Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports**.
At the **Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium** in Delhi, participants included athletes, students, and fitness enthusiasts, highlighting a united effort towards a healthier lifestyle. Special guests included gymnasts **Sneha Tariyal**, an international medalist, and **Priyanshu Nath Thakur**, a sub-junior national gold medalist, who participated alongside **Lakhan Sharma**, an Olympic gymnastics coach.
CSE Director-General **Sunita Narain** emphasized the critical link between physical fitness and environmental health, stating, “Our air has to be clean, and in the same way our health will improve.” She stressed that initiatives like Fit India contribute significantly to improving air quality.
Thakur echoed this sentiment, remarking, “We are all looking for fresh air. Cycling keeps our body and mind healthy and strong.” This statement reflects the collective goal of promoting fitness and environmental consciousness among participants.
Beyond the capital, similar events unfolded across the country, including locations such as **SAI STC Kargil**, **SAI Lucknow**, and **STC Cuttack**. Since its inception in **December 2024**, which saw around **500 participants** in Delhi and **1,000 locations** nationwide, the **Fit India Sundays on Cycle** initiative has grown into a movement attracting over **50,000 participants** weekly from **6,000 locations**.
The initiative has engaged more than **1.45 million citizens** across **125,000 locations**, evolving into a nationwide campaign focused on fitness, sustainability, and social harmony. Olympic gymnastics coach **Lakhan Sharma** remarked on the initiative’s growth, noting, “So many people have joined us across the length and breadth of the country in all these months, and we must keep expanding it further.”
Gymnast **Sneha Tariyal** highlighted the inclusivity of cycling, stating, “Old to young, everyone is here to cycle. It keeps you healthy and helps combat pollution.” This sentiment resonates with the movement’s objective to inspire individuals of all ages to engage in physical activity.
The significance of Fit India Sundays was underscored in **Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s** **Mann Ki Baat** program, where he praised how diverse participants unite every Sunday to promote health and happiness through fitness. The initiative is further supported by over **3,500 NaMo Fit India Cycling Clubs**, which serve as the backbone of this citizen-driven movement, ensuring widespread participation in health-oriented activities.
Under the leadership of **Mansukh Mandaviya**, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, the initiative has transformed into a **Jan Andolan** for fitness, attracting new groups and communities weekly. Participants span a wide range of professions, including members of the **Central Armed Police Forces**, healthcare workers, teachers, and local residents, showcasing a diverse representation in this national effort.
As this initiative continues to grow, it is clear that **Fit India Sundays on Cycle** is more than just a fitness event; it is a vibrant celebration of community spirit, environmental responsibility, and personal health across India.
