Chula BMI Launches Comprehensive Obesity Treatment Services

The Chulalongkorn Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (Chula BMI) has introduced a comprehensive obesity treatment program at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok. This initiative aims to provide holistic care for individuals struggling with obesity, integrating medical, surgical, nutritional, and psychological support under one roof.
Professor Suthep Udomsawaengsup, a leading bariatric surgeon and the Director of Chula BMI, emphasized the importance of early intervention for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher. “For those whose BMI exceeds 25, it’s time to take care of their physical health,” he stated. The institute aims to combat obesity, a condition linked to numerous health issues including diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular diseases.
Established in 2007, Chula BMI reports treating approximately 2,000 to 3,000 patients annually through non-surgical methods, while 120 to 150 patients undergo surgical procedures each year. The institute also encourages previous patients to share their success stories, fostering a supportive community for those seeking treatment.
Comprehensive Care Under One Roof
Chula BMI employs a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together specialists from various fields to address the complex nature of obesity. The team includes endocrinologists, pulmonologists, psychiatrists, and nutritionists, among others, who collaborate to provide tailored care for patients. For instance, endocrinologists address hormonal disorders that may contribute to obesity, while nutritionists offer personalized dietary plans.
Patients receive a thorough orientation upon arrival, followed by individualized assessments to create a customized treatment plan. The facility emphasizes privacy and comfort, ensuring a supportive environment for patients and their families.
Professor Suthep outlined treatment options based on BMI classifications. Individuals with a BMI of 25–29.9 may begin with lifestyle modifications, focusing on nutrition and exercise. For those with a BMI of 27.5–29.9, medications may be introduced to assist in weight management. Patients with a BMI over 30 might require surgical interventions, such as gastric bypass surgery, to effectively manage obesity and its related health complications.
Future Innovations and Community Support
The issue of obesity is escalating globally, with an estimated 1.9 billion people projected to be classified as obese by 2035. In Thailand, a significant 42.2% of individuals aged 15 and older are categorized as obese. Chula BMI is committed to advancing research and innovative treatment methods, such as the potential use of intragastric balloons, which can help patients lose 10–15% of their body weight.
While weight loss medications can play a role in treatment, Professor Suthep cautioned against self-medication. “It is always advisable to consult medical professionals for proper treatment and follow-up,” he advised, highlighting the importance of using FDA-approved medications to minimize health risks.
Ultimately, Chula BMI advocates for a preventative approach to obesity. As Professor Suthep concluded, “The best way to manage obesity is to prevent it in the first place.” The institute emphasizes the need for community support and understanding, stating that societal compassion can significantly aid individuals living with obesity in regaining their health and well-being.
