Chelsea Rallies to Combat Illness Ahead of Brentford Showdown
Chelsea is actively addressing a health issue within its squad as they prepare for their Premier League match against Brentford on January 15. Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that the club is working diligently to prevent further spread of an illness that has already sidelined players Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens, along with several staff members.
Delap and Gittens were unable to participate in Chelsea’s recent 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final. Following the match, Rosenior reported that both players were suffering from “really high temperatures.” He stated, “Liam (Delap) is still at home at the moment, as is Jamie Gittens. The club doctors are doing everything they can to contain what looks to be a virus because some members of our staff have gone down as well.”
To mitigate the situation, Rosenior organized a meeting with the players to emphasize the importance of hygiene practices, such as handwashing. He noted, “We had a meeting today with the players about washing their hands, the basics, which is really important and hopefully we can contain it. We have a busy period so we need everyone ready to go and fit and healthy.”
With only one win in their last nine Premier League games, Chelsea is eager to regain momentum against fifth-placed Brentford. The team may receive a significant boost with the potential return of key players Reece James and Cole Palmer, both of whom missed the FA Cup victory over Charlton Athletic and the match against Arsenal due to injuries sustained the previous week. Rosenior provided an optimistic update, saying, “Both of them are training today. We just need to assess them after training and make sure they come through all the protocols they need to come through, but it would be great to have them back in the squad.”
Another topic of discussion has been the performance of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who faced scrutiny after making critical errors in the Arsenal match. Sanchez struggled to manage a corner from Declan Rice, allowing Ben White to score early, and later spilled a cross, leading to another goal by Viktor Gyokeres. In addressing the issue, Rosenior stated, “I am here to assess every position. I don’t have number ones or number twos, that’s not how I work. There has to be competition, not just in the goalkeeping department but in every position on the pitch, and you have to earn your spot in this team.”
As Chelsea looks to turn their season around, the health of the squad and the return of injured players will be critical factors in their upcoming clash against Brentford. The team’s ability to navigate these challenges will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
