Asia Medical Week 2025 Unites Healthcare Leaders in Bali

Healthcare leaders gathered in Bali, Indonesia, from September 12 to 13, 2025, for the Asia Medical Week (AMW) and the Asia Medical Innovation and Development Forum. The event aimed to enhance cross-border collaboration and resilience among healthcare professionals across Asia.

Organized by the Fudan Zhongshan Hospital and various leading institutions, this year’s AMW emphasized a theme of “Bridging Nations, Healing Futures.” The Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital hosted the summit, highlighting Indonesia’s dedication to transforming its healthcare system into a competitive and self-sufficient entity.

In opening remarks, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, expressed the country’s commitment to building a robust healthcare framework. “Our goal is to transform from a country where people often seek treatment abroad into a nation capable of delivering adequate health services at home,” he stated. This transformation, he continued, requires continuous investment and policies that align with international standards.

The event also marked a significant milestone with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing institutional collaboration between hospitals in Indonesia and China. Yinghong Shi, Vice President of Zhongshan Hospital, remarked, “Returning to Indonesia after six years is a proud milestone for us. We look forward to working with partners to chart a new blueprint for resilient medical cooperation across Asia.”

Mindray, a global leader in medical devices, played a crucial role at the summit, contributing to discussions on advancing healthcare goals. The company outlined its four strategic priorities: Smart Healthcare, Talent Development, Research and Innovation, and Medical Industry Empowerment.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Healthcare Transformation

The transformation of Indonesia’s health resilience system is essential for maintaining a robust national healthcare framework. Mindray showcased partnerships that focus on enhancing local capacity, particularly with facilities like Siloam Hospitals Group and Mayapada Healthcare. These collaborations connect critical hospital departments, significantly improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

A pressing issue in Indonesia is the shortage of medical specialists. The Ministry of Health reported that the country produces only 2,700 new specialists annually, a stark contrast to the 32,000 needed. To address this gap, Mindray launched its “Project 2025,” which includes establishing 14 ultrasound schools across Southeast Asia, training over 1,000 young physicians in various medical fields.

Advancing Regional Knowledge and Innovation

The emphasis on collaboration continued throughout AMW 2025, reinforcing its significance in healthcare progress. Mindray announced new milestones in scientific collaboration, notably partnering with Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital to co-publish the Southeast Asia Consensus Statement on Pelvic Floor Ultrasound Standardization. This initiative united nearly 20 hospitals in the region to improve diagnostic practices and elevate care standards.

Mindray also stressed the importance of local production in empowering Indonesia’s medical device industry. Since 2022, its facility in Kendal, Central Java, has produced essential medical supplies, including syringes and infusion pumps. In September 2025, the company opened a second facility focused on manufacturing ventilators and anesthesia machines, further enhancing local capacity and reducing reliance on imports.

Zaiwen Li, Senior Vice President of Mindray, remarked, “Building a truly resilient healthcare system requires more than the technology we continue to build. It demands the integration of people, knowledge, and local capacity.”
