Ahmedabad Doctors Launch 24/7 Helpline for Diwali Health Safety
The Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) has partnered with the Ahmedabad Family Physicians Association (AFPA) to launch a dedicated medical helpline aimed at ensuring the health and safety of residents during the Diwali celebrations. Starting on October 19 and running until October 26, the ‘Doctor on Call’ helpline will provide round-the-clock medical guidance and immediate treatment support.
Round-the-Clock Medical Assistance
This initiative is designed to assist residents in Ahmedabad with health-related emergencies, first aid inquiries, and urgent medical advice during a time when health incidents typically rise due to festive activities. Fireworks, indulgent sweets, and crowded gatherings can lead to various health issues, prompting the need for accessible medical support.
The helpline will operate continuously throughout the week-long celebrations, reinforcing the commitment of healthcare professionals to the community’s welfare. Citizens can access necessary contact information and details about participating doctors on the official AMA website. Volunteer doctors from both the AMA and AFPA will be on hand to offer guidance over the phone, making professional medical advice available to all residents.
Addressing Common Health Risks
During the Diwali season, specific health risks often increase. The AMA has noted a rise in burn injuries from fireworks, typically affecting the hands, face, and eyes, which can sometimes result in permanent damage. Additionally, respiratory issues often escalate, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with asthma or chronic lung conditions due to exposure to smoke and firecracker fumes.
Cardiac events and spikes in blood pressure are also reported during this festive time, as the excitement and indulgence in rich foods can take a toll on those with pre-existing conditions. As streets and homes fill with people, accidental falls and fractures become more common. Furthermore, food-related illnesses like indigestion or food poisoning can arise from the consumption of festive meals and sweets.
By launching this helpline, Ahmedabad’s medical community aims to provide timely assistance, ensuring that while the city enjoys the lights and festivities of Diwali, health emergencies are promptly addressed. This proactive measure complements other safety initiatives in the city, reflecting a broader commitment to public health during significant celebrations.
