Xie Shaoguang Makes Emotional Return to TV After 20 Years

Xie Shaoguang, a well-known figure in the entertainment industry, returns to television after a two-decade hiatus, taking on a poignant role in the upcoming drama The Gift of Time. The show is set to premiere on October 20, 2023, and features a strong cast, including Chen Hanwei, Xiang Yun, Chantalle Ng, Jeremy Chan, Desmond Ng, and Priscelia Chan.
In this heartfelt narrative, Xie portrays a wealthy man who, alongside Chen’s character from a humble background, confronts their shared diagnosis of cancer. The story highlights their evolving bond as they dedicate themselves to helping other terminally ill patients fulfill their wishes.
Xie expressed his deep connection to the themes presented in the drama. During a press conference, he shared, “They told me there was this serial dealing with a theme that actually, I am totally in tune with. I’m concerned about ageing, sickness and death.” He emphasized the universal nature of these issues, stating, “No matter how rich I am or how successful, when it comes to the end of life, you face all this, suddenly it gives you a slap in the face.”
The subject resonates personally with Xie, who has experienced cancer’s impact within his family. “In my family, there have been a few cancer patients, and my dad passed on because of pancreatic cancer,” he revealed. “And now, my best friend is battling in a final stage of cancer. So, it’s very dear to me.” His commitment extends beyond acting, as he has also engaged in volunteer work with cancer patients.
In his preparation for the role, Xie brought his personal understanding of the emotional and physical toll cancer can take. He noted the importance of conveying the struggles faced by patients authentically, stating, “Those are things you cannot present unless you’re going to do a documentary.”
Xie also chose to shave his head in solidarity with cancer patients, a decision that underscores his dedication to the role. “To me, my appearance is not an issue,” he affirmed. “I accept myself. That’s why I live my age.”
Returning to the screen after such a long absence has been a positive experience for Xie. He remarked on the advancements in technology that have made the process smoother, saying, “Oh, it’s much easier! Now, the technical side of things is so advanced because of digital technology.” He appreciates how these developments have changed the acting landscape, allowing him to focus more on his craft.
However, Xie expressed concerns about the impact of technology on human interaction. He observed, “People don’t know how to read human emotions and expressions anymore. Everything is on screen, work is on Zoom.” He believes that taking time for introspection is crucial in today’s fast-paced digital world.
While Xie has not confirmed any future projects, he remains open to new opportunities. He stated, “I always try to be satisfied. I try to enjoy every bit. Once I make the decision, no matter what it brings, I say, come what may, and bring it on.”
Fans can look forward to watching The Gift of Time on demand for free on mewatch starting October 20, 2023, with its premiere on Channel 8 set for October 23, 2023, airing weekdays at 21:00.
