Viral ‘Bird Theory’ Test Sparks Conversation on Relationships
A recent TikTok video showcasing the so-called “bird theory” has captured significant attention, amassing nearly 5 million views within just five days. In the video, Layne Berthoud, an occupational therapist based in Los Angeles, shares a brief exchange with her husband, Alexandre Berthoud. As she mentions seeing a bird, he responds with curiosity, thus unknowingly demonstrating the essence of this viral relationship test.
The premise of the bird theory is straightforward yet intriguing. One partner mentions a bird or shares a fictitious encounter, and the other’s response is observed. A partner who replies with interest is considered to “pass” the test, while a lack of curiosity indicates a “failure.” This test aims to gauge a partner’s responsiveness to what therapists refer to as “bids for connection,” a concept popularized by renowned marriage researcher John Gottman. His studies suggest that couples who maintain strong connections acknowledge these bids approximately 86 percent of the time, while those who separate only do so 33 percent of the time.
While the bird theory has gained traction, relationship experts express mixed feelings about its validity. Dr. Carrie Cole, director of research at the Gottman Institute, acknowledges the importance of responding to one another, but raises concerns regarding the implications of a test based on a contrived scenario. “What if your partner fails?” she questions. “Because we’re not perfect. Happily married couples are not perfect. What then?”
Social Media Tests: A Reflection of Relationship Dynamics
The bird theory is not the only social media relationship test to gain popularity. Another example, known as the “orange peel theory,” encourages partners to perform simple tasks for each other to gauge their willingness to help. Additionally, discussions around the “princess treatment” have surfaced, reflecting the desire for validation in intimate relationships.
Clinical psychologist Alexandra Solomon notes that these social media trends echo the relationship quizzes once found in magazines. She highlights the underlying question many individuals have in relationships: “Are we okay? How are we doing?” The popularity of tests like the bird theory signals a collective desire to understand what contributes to successful relationships. Solomon explains that a partner’s success in these tests can offer a sense of validation, while failures may foster camaraderie among those sharing their experiences.
Encouraging Open Communication
Despite the appeal of these TikTok tests, relationship experts caution against placing too much significance on the results. Dr. Cole emphasizes that if a partner does not pass the test, it should not be viewed as a sign of impending doom for the relationship. Instead, she suggests using such moments as opportunities for deeper conversations about needs and expectations.
Layne Berthoud, who is happily married, anticipated her husband’s positive response during the bird test. She admits that while many TikTok users have reported their partners “failing” the test, her relationship thrives on mutual support and understanding. The couple does not engage in testing each other in any meaningful way. Instead, they focus on daily acts of kindness and connection, such as sharing household responsibilities and thoughtful gestures.
Reflecting on the viral nature of her video, Berthoud remarks on the amusing aspects of social media culture. “It’s like a total study in humanity,” she said, considering the myriad opinions shared by viewers. Ultimately, she believes that if pressing relationship questions arise, they should be addressed directly, rather than through a social media lens.
As the bird theory continues to proliferate online, it highlights not only the complexities of relationships but also the ways in which individuals seek to understand and validate their connections with others. While entertaining, these tests may serve as a catalyst for more profound discussions about love and partnership.
