Evelyn Lam, a well-known face in Chinese news and current affairs, is leaving Mediacorp after a distinguished career spanning 17 years to pursue a new path in psychology. On October 27, 2023, Lam announced via Instagram that she would be “graduating from the newsroom,” marking the conclusion of her impactful tenure in journalism.
Reflecting on her last day at Mediacorp, Lam expressed a mix of nostalgia and excitement as she prepared for a vacation in Bangkok. “I was just living in that moment… It felt surreal, but I thought, this is the end of a chapter. I’m taking a lot of memories with me,” she shared in an interview with 8Days.sg on October 29.
A Memorable Farewell and Career Highlights
Her colleagues organized an emotional farewell, presenting her with cakes, flowers, and heartfelt gifts. Lam reminisced about her career, highlighting the high-pressure moments that defined her journey. One of her most nerve-wracking experiences was interviewing Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who she described as “the scariest person to interview.” Over the years, she grew more comfortable in such high-stakes situations.
Among her standout experiences, Lam counts her role in covering the recent General Elections, where she hosted both polling night and nomination day broadcasts. “It was one of the busiest times of my career,” she noted, recalling the challenges of balancing her media responsibilities with her studies for a practitioner diploma in psychotherapy.
Pursuing a New Direction in Psychology
Lam’s decision to shift from journalism to therapy is rooted in her lifelong passion for learning. While she has previously explored various subjects, including data analysis and fashion design, her current focus is on psychological therapy. “I came across a course on hypnotherapy… Then I realised it really helps people,” she explained.
Now preparing to join a private clinic as an associate therapist, Lam plans to build her portfolio officially in January 2024. She is also gearing up to pursue her master’s degree in psychology, as obtaining this qualification is essential for her ultimate goal of becoming a psychologist.
“This field requires continuous learning, and I don’t think I’ll be stopping anytime soon,” she said, reflecting her commitment to personal and professional growth. Lam’s transition illustrates her desire to embrace new challenges and make a positive impact in the lives of others.
With her curiosity and dedication, Evelyn Lam is poised to embark on this new chapter, leaving behind a legacy in journalism while pursuing her dream of helping others through therapy.
