Tiffany Queen Shines at Miss International Queen Contest in Thailand

Taiwan’s Tiffany Queen (鄭宥筠) captivated audiences at the Miss International Queen pageant held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on October 7, 2023, showcasing a stunning outfit that celebrated Taiwanese folk culture. Although she did not secure a position in the competition, which is recognized as the world’s largest transgender beauty pageant, her attire was hailed as “dazzling” and drew significant attention during the event.
The costume was inspired by the general guards (將軍守) often seen in Taiwan’s temple processions. It featured a hand-painted mask, a tall headdress, and a trident, all emblematic of spiritual authority and protection against evil spirits. In Taiwanese folk belief, these guards serve as protectors and are prominently featured at the forefront of temple parades, characterized by their fierce expressions and dramatic movements.
Queen, 30, revealed that she and her team dedicated over a month to the design and construction of the outfit. Their creative process involved visits to several temples, consultations with local masters, and support from temple communities that provided both equipment and guidance. “The costume carries layers of cultural meaning rooted in Taiwan’s centuries-old religious practices,” she explained.
Attending the Miss International Queen contest was a personal milestone for Queen, as she described it as a “very meaningful experience” and a childhood dream come true. The event included filming in Chiang Mai, cultural exchanges, and interactions with sponsors, enhancing its significance for all participants.
Chen Wei-hsiang (陳韋翔), a makeup artist who worked with Queen, noted that both judges and fellow contestants were intrigued by the originality of her costume. He praised it as a creative representation of Taiwan’s rich heritage. “I would say the Taiwanese team is incredibly popular, especially Tiffany, who gets along well with the international contestants, because she brings such positive energy,” Chen remarked.
The Miss International Queen pageant has been a platform for promoting greater social acceptance of the transgender community since its inception 19 years ago. This year, Midori Monet from the United States won first place, while Olivia Lauren of Cuba and Ha Tam Nhu of Vietnam were named runners-up.
Queen’s participation not only highlighted Taiwan’s cultural heritage but also underscored the importance of representation and acceptance within the global community.
