Singapore Authorities Consider Action Against Comedian Sammy Obeid

The Singaporean authorities are contemplating potential actions against American comedian Sammy Obeid following his allegations regarding the cancellation of a scheduled performance. Edwin Tong, the Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, stated on August 31, 2023, that Obeid’s account of events was “completely fictional.” This remark came during a media interaction at the Siglap South Community Centre.

Minister Tong emphasized the need to clarify the situation, asserting that Obeid’s claims did not align with the facts. “Mr. Obeid has put up a completely fictional account of what transpired between him and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA),” he said. The Minister confirmed that the authorities are now evaluating what further steps might be necessary in response to the comedian’s assertions.

Ongoing disputes arose after Obeid took to Instagram, alleging that his performance script had been rejected twice by the IMDA. He claimed he was instructed to remove references to the Gaza conflict and other content. His social media post gained significant traction, receiving over 49,000 likes and more than 6,000 shares.

In his post, Obeid described a long wait for approval, stating that he had only minimally referenced Palestine and mentioned Israel once in his script. He claimed that his first submission was rejected after weeks of waiting, despite his attempts to accommodate requests for edits. He stated, “I completely caved” and made the necessary changes. Obeid asserted that his second script was also rejected, with claims that he was told there was insufficient time for further submission.

Minister Tong countered these claims, stating that the IMDA had not requested any edits to Obeid’s script and had no communication with him regarding the matter. He noted that this information was corroborated by the comedian’s agent. According to Tong, Obeid’s application was ultimately rejected because it was submitted late.

“The rules say that license applications have to be submitted 40 working days before a show,” Tong explained. In this instance, Obeid applied on August 15 for a show scheduled on August 31, which he described as being approximately 30 days late.

The IMDA also clarified on August 31 that several of Obeid’s allegations regarding the cancellation were inaccurate. The event’s local representative received notification on August 19 via email that the late application could not be processed. This decision was reiterated through a phone call and in writing on August 25.

An IMDA spokesperson stated, “The organiser had informed IMDA that she was unaware the comedian would make such claims and has emails and recordings showing she repeatedly reminded him the application was late and that no script edits were required.” The spokesperson further noted that the decision was strictly based on timing and expressed that they had been unable to reach Obeid since his posts went public.

As the situation develops, the implications for Obeid and the Singaporean comedy scene remain uncertain. The authorities’ response will likely hinge on a thorough examination of the facts surrounding the incident and Obeid’s communications with IMDA.
